HES 2330 Thermodynamics 1 Semester 1 – 2013 ASSIGNMENT 2 Due Date: 29 May 2013, 5.00 PM Dropbox: Mailbox 83 (HES2330/HES4330) – Level 8, ATC Building 1. A container filled with 45 kg of liquid water at 95oC is placed in a 90-m3 room that is initially at 12oC. The thermal equilibrium is established after a while as a result of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room. Using constant specific heats, determine (a) the final equilibrium temperature, (b) the amount of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room, and (c) the entropy generation. Assume the room is well sealed and heavily insulated. 2. An ideal Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 9.2 and uses air as the working fluid. At the beginning of the compression process, air is at 98 kPa and 27oC. The pressure is doubled during the constant-volume heat-addition process. Accounting for the variation of specific heats with temperature, determine (a) the amount of heat transferred to the air, (b) the net work output, (c) the thermal efficiency, and (d) the mean effective pressure for the cycle. 3. A gas turbine power plant uses solar energy as the source of heat addition (see Figure for detailed setup and operating data). Modelling the cycle as a Brayton cycle and assuming no pressure drops in the heat exchanger or interconnecting piping, determine: (a) the thermal efficiency; (b) the air mass flow rate, in kg/s, for a net power output of 500kW.…

Belonging can be understood as having a place in the society. Belonging is influenced by social, historical, cultural and personal experiences, which all help to shape our identity. Our choices can lead us to feeling like we belong, or there may be barriers preventing us as individuals from making connections to people or groups. Belonging gives us security and ensures us that we belong to place, family, and culture. While not belonging can lead to insecurities which leads to questioning yourself if your good enough for the society to belong.…

“Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks contends that from death and destruction inevitably comes rebirth. Brooks proposes that from the most devastating events in life, humans can still emerge as stronger and more powerful individuals or the complete opposite where the charisma and confidence of the strong-minded slowly begins to wear down. The protagonist Anna Frith displays this through her determination and perseverance to continue to support the townspeople through the tragedies and brutal deaths endured by the plague, even though she has lost the people dearest to her. While Michael Mompellion’s faith deteriorates during the concluding stages of the novel through the continuation of the painful events that surround him. This suggests that the human spirit depicts the type of rebirth created after death and destruction.…

Communism State ownership of all enterprises a centrally controlled economic system that would provide equally for everyone, and a one-party (communist) state. Non-communists Private ownership, allowing the free forces of the market to run the economy and giving the people a democratic choice of government. The cold war Had a policy of trying to dominate certain parts of the world Used spies, economic pressure and propaganda against each other Steadily built up all types of weapons Took each other on by threatening armed conflict but always pilling back from the brink. Supported proxy wars around the world (helped smaller nations or groups who were fighting nations or groups sympathetic to or receiving aid from the other side). Western capitalist nations feared communist spread and hence Americans sought policy of containment (prevent further spread of communism). Eastern communist nations believed the capitalist West were trying to destroy communism. The spread of communism 1945 Onward There was a great fear in the West that communism had become an unstoppable force that might take over all capitalist countries. There were many attempts by communists to seize power in many parts of the world, e.g. Latvia, Estonia, Lithuanian, Eastern Europe (except Yugoslavia), East Germany, China, South Korea and French Indochina. As communism was spreading all over the…
