Was Buick really no. 5 in 1990?

In 1990, Buick advertised extensively that a survey of over 26, 000 new-car buyers had revealed that Buick was the only American car line ranked in the top 10 in initial quality based on owner reported problems during the first 90 days. Buick featured in its ads, a list of the top-10 automobiles in the survey, in which it was ranked fifth: behind Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Infiniti and ahead of Honda, Nissan, Acura, BMW, and Mazda. All nine of these other car lines are Japanese or German.

In his nationally syndicated column, “High Five Is Goodbye Wave, Not the Symbol of Quality,” August 23, 1990, columnist George Will somewhat berated Buick for bragging about only being fifth. He stated that the “We’re Number One” boasts of wining college football players and their fans may be “mistaken, and the passion may be disproportionate to the achievement, but at least it is better than chanting ‘We’re Number Five.”’

Mr. Will noted that such ads imply, “Don’t expect us to measure up to the big boys – the ones overseas.” He wanted Americans to become “impatient and censorious about lax standards (We’re Number 5) that are producing pandemic shoddiness in everything rom cars to art to second graders’ homework.” Mr. Will ended his column: “Americans would feel better, and might be more inclined to buy Buick, if they saw an ad reprinting the list above, but with a text that says: ‘Fifth place is not nearly good enough for Americans to brag about. And until we do better, we apologize!”’

Mr. Will may well have been correct that many U.S. firms were not producing products up to the quality standards of many foreign firms. We want to point out, however, that his criticism of Buick’s boast of being number five as indicative of shoddy American quality may not have been quite valid. In fact, it may be great to be “Number

Buick is one of four brands in the General Motors line-up of automobiles. In an effort to increase sales, General Motors is rebranding the Buick image to appeal to a broader spectrum of customers. Historically, Buick has often been thought of as “a brand for older customers” (Healey, 2012). Buick now sees an opportunity to challenge that image because of potential new market segments; higher income distribution is creeping into younger, tech-savvy age groups and there has been a dramatic rise of the upper middle-class in China. By borrowing lessons learned from European automakers regarding style and service, Buick can deliver a quality, attractive product.…

Despite the large scale operations of the company, GM has multiple areas of concern that need to be addressed in order to sustain long term value for both stakeholders and shareholders. Preliminary results of this analysis indicate that GM suffered enormous financial losses as a result of poor product quality, lack of consumer appeal, lag in alternative fuel technologies, inefficient plant production, and a saturation of similar car models amongst their brands. Due to these factors, consumer perception has plagued the company‘s sales, resulting in a steady decrease in market share across all platforms (www.gm.com).…

We, as Americans, play right into the advertisements. Auto sales have gone through the roof and cars are being replaced to improve what people have, not because they legitimately need a replacement. For the first time in history, there are now more working cars that have been sold than there are drivers. Eight trillion dollars were spent by consumers on products in the retail industry in 2002 alone. Spurlock looks at the big picture in The Eater Reader: “We spend more on ourselves than the entire gross national product of any nation in the world” (Spurlock 40). Two hundred, twenty-two billion dollars were spent in 2003 on medication. It is almost as if we are being told what to do and how to live. You would think that as Americans, we would have control over what we buy and the decisions we make. By watching television and reading the newspaper as much as we do, we allow marketing companies to have as much control as we do without physically buying the products for…

Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' (September 23, 1908 – April 24, 1974) was an Indian Hindi poet, essayist and academician, who is considered as one of the most important modern Hindi poets. Dinkar emerged as a rebellious poet with his nationalist poetry in pre-Independence days. His poetry exuded veer rasa, and he has been hailed as a Rashtrakavi ("National poet") evoking the spirit of nationalism on account of his inspiring patriotic composition. As a mark of respect for him, his portrait was unveiled in the Central Hall of Parliament of India by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on his centenary year, 2008. Dinkar initially supported the revolutionary movement during the Indian Independence struggle, but later became a Gandhian. However, he used to call himself a 'Bad Gandhian' because he supported the feelings of indignation and revenge among the youth. In Kurukshetra, he accepts that the war is destructive, but says that it is necessary for the protection of freedom. Dinkar was three times elected to Rajya Sabha, and he was the member of this house from April 3, 1952 CE to January 26, 1964 CE, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1959. During The Emergency, Jayaprakash Narayan had attracted a gathering of one lakh people at the Ramlila Grounds and thunderously recited Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar's wonderfully evocative poetry: Singhasan Khaali Karo Ke Janata Aaati Hai.…
