Movie Theater: Creation of Economic Opportunities and Excitement
It will totally be good news for me if a new movie theater is planned to be built in my neighborhood. The new movie theater will bring not only new atmosphere, convenience, but also create economical enhancement for people in my living place.
First and foremost, my neighborhood will expose to a new exciting atmosphere with the presence of the new movie theater. At present, there is no movie theater in my neighborhood. Without such a wonderful place for gathering and entertaining, people, especially youth like me, find our living place extremely boring. If the theater is built, children will have more chance to open their mind to the newest Disney’s movies, young couples are able to enjoy new films together, friends and colleges can share their relaxing moments after working and studying time, and family member might stay closer together watching meaningful movies. Needless to say, the people in my neighborhood will have better entertainment conditions, and that make their life become more interesting.
What is more, it will be much more convenient to live near a movie theater. Whenever people in my town want to go out to watch a film, it usually takes them 30 minutes to travel from home to the city’s movie theater. Now, thanks to the location of the new movie theater, all they have to do is to walk only few minutes to enjoy the films. Everyone, especially children and old people, therefore, is able to avoid bad weather or heavy traffic which is not good for their health.
Last but not least, the construction and operation of the new movie theater will significantly help in enhancing the economic condition of people in my neighborhood. There is no doubt that the new construction will require a large number of labors which may come from my neighbors. After the construction is finished, the movie theater needs people, such as managers and sales employees, to run its operating activities. It was the success of this theatre which prompted other entrepenuers to open their own nickleodeons. My research has led me to believe it was the production companies who produced the movies along with the theatres demand for new product which sparked the explosion of interest in nickelodoen theatres. Musser, (1994) claims “the rapid proliferation of specialised storefront moving-picture theatres created a revolution in screen entertainment”. He continues by saying “their[nickelodeon theatres] explosive demand for product would not only increase film production but force its reorganization.” This claim is backed up by (Thompson and Bordwell, 1994) who say the reasons for the rapid spread of nickelodeon theatres can be attributed to a few reasons. According to Thompson and Bordwell, the first reason for this rapid spread was due to the film exibitors who switched from selling films to nickelodeon theatres to renting films to them. This in turn led to lower costs for the nickelodeon theatre owners and these lower costs to rent films led to them having the ability to “change their program multiple times per week” (Thompson and Bordwell, 1994). Nigerians are deprived of these facilities in urban centres due to poverty and failure to maintain the existing ones, among other reasons. However, in the words of Simone (2005:1), Africans ensure that they make the city conducive in spite of the challenges they face; they ensure that they make the city ‘a platform to consolidate particular approaches to engaging a larger world’. Nigerian youths are no exception and appear to have played a crucial role in this process over time. One of the means adopted among urban youths in Nigeria in the process of making urban centres conducive for living and meeting the expected status quo is the establishment of local cinema halls (viewing centres) usually constructed with planks and wood benches for the spectators, to accommodate fifty spectators or more. A large television set is usually placed in the hall and connected to cable networks. The proprietors of these cinemas halls (mostly youths) collect a token for tickets from spectators (youths) to watch international football matches and sometimes foreign movies. This is a welcome development considering the ability of youths to re-invent and transform the public space to their survival and satisfaction (Diouf 1996:228; Honwana and Boeck 2005:17; Biaya 2005:214).
