Movie Review The Patriot
The movie The Patriot is set in the time period of the late 18th century, the time period of the American Revolution. Mel Gibson plays the character Benjamin Martin, a farmer, and widower of seven children. In the film a British officer murders a son of Benjamin, at which time he gather a small army of farmers and Indians and leads them into battle with the British.
The film does a good job and portraying the effects of the time period and events that take place. In some scenes the battles are sneak attacks which would happen when untrained farmers are fighting; while on the other hand some battles are fought in rows like a standard battle would take place in this time. Some of the weapons are standard guns and cannons and things of that nature while on the other hand some of the inexperienced fighters use hand help weapons such as clubs and tomahawks to fight close up. In context to history of this time some the weaponry can be seen as historically inaccurate, more specifically the cannon. The cannons during this time use metal projectiles to mow through the armies. Exploding projectiles were no yet invented.
The film portrays a lot of material from this time period; however there are some things that are inaccurate, besides the weaponry. In the first shot of the film, two of the children are seen playing with alphabet cards. These cards also known as "Hotch Potch" cards weren't printed until 1782. However the scenes in the film take place in 1776. Also later in the film when the militia are about to be hanged, just before Ben rides in, you see the British prepare for the hanging by testing tying sandbags to the noose and opening the trap doors. In actuality, hanging with trap doors didn't happen until after the war was over. Further in my research I found another historical inaccuracy, the film portrays some dogs by the name of Great Danes these animals were not known by that name until the late 19th century, before that they were called Boar Hounds. In the book, McCullough uses sources as recent as 2004, which was one year before the book was published. While there are some new sources in the book, most of the sources are fairly old. I think that David McCullough has done an amazing job in writing 1776. It is one of the few accurate and scholarly history books that reads like a novel, which I was extremely pleased with. The authors style is easy to read in some places of the book, but more difficult to read in others. It has never been exceedingly difficult, however. In some places, like in the discussion of events leading up to action, the book can be dry, especially if there are an abundance of dates and names to remember. But in the parts of the book where there are character descriptions, or especially battle scenes, the book becomes impossible to put down. He uses such vivid imagery, especially in the battle of bunker hill and in the last chapter. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves history, or even to anyone who is an avid reader. The story really is told in such an entertaining way, you do not even have to love history to enjoy…

McCullough strategically and chronologically delineates each battle of the Revolution beginning with the Battle of Bunker Hill. Throughout each of the battles, McCullough thoroughly explains the colonial struggles and accomplishments as he also displays the British as a nasty group of individuals who were hard-hearted with loyalty to the Crown. However, most of the Loyalists simply feared the British royalty as punishment for treason was overbearingly harsh. Although biased, McCullough carefully displays the American Revolution as brutal for both the British and the colonists. He writes of “the most crucial year” from a cardinal view, concentrating emphasis on American strategy rather than British strategy. He acknowledges the British’s major distress, yet he undermines the importance of the drudgery of the Loyalists, disregarding the punishments that they were forced to endure by the colonists. Some of these castigations include the practice of tarring and feathering and merciless murder.…

The book actually begins in October of 1775 with King George the third declaring the American colonies in a state of rebellion. Once we hit the year 1776, the battle of Bunker Hill begins. Even though the rebels technically lost that battle, the author points out the heavy loses that the British had. Soon after this defeat, the Americans secure Boston by placing stolen cannons high around the harbor. Seeing their imminent doom, the British were forced to retreat. This book didn’t just tell the events as they happened like most non-fiction history books do, it was told like a story.…

One chilly night on March 5th, 1770 war broke out between the Patriots and the Loyalists. It occurred on King Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Before this event took place, the British had decided to tax the colonists for many manufactured items acquired through trade. This caused an outrage in the populace of Boston, mostly for the impoverished people. Ever since then, the colonists have been boycotting and protesting against these inequitable laws. Then on this day the Patriots and Loyalists were bickering when a shot was fired into the crowd of the Loyalists and then someone had yelled “Fire!” and in the end, few Patriots were killed and some injured. This anger the Colonists greatly and they deserved justice, this night will always be remembered…

As exciting as the sound of bugle calls us to arms, the Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, earns people’s hearts by its attractive and enthralling plot of the epic of a South Carolinian planter and widower Benjamin Martin(played by Mel Gibson) fighting the ruthless and brutal British dragoon captain called William Tavington(played by Jason Isaacs). A father of seven children, Martin is one of the British army during the French-Indian War, but with the tension evoked between America and Britain, and the unfortunate deaths of his two sons, Martin is determined to fight a bloody battle against the British in American Revolution. In general, the movie is attractive and heart-stirring, yet the actions of characters are so inaccurate, making the viewers to experience the illogical exaggeration combined with excitement.…

Great detail is put into costumes, buildings, battlefields and role-playing to bring us back into this era. This has for effect to give the impression to the viewer that what he is watching has some historical value when in fact it is purely a story of fiction and is merely based on some century old legends and a couple of documented facts about the war. This is brilliantly demonstrated when Colonel Tavington, the character vaguely based on an actual English officer called Banastre Tarleton, herds all the townspeople into the church and sets fire to it, killing everybody inside. This was actually done by the Nazis during World War II in a French town called Oradour and was recognized as being one of the most vicious acts ever performed by the invading oppressors. This never happened during the Independence…

In “The Patriot”, the tactics of war used by the British Army differ significantly from those used by the American rebels. The British based war and victory on honor. If a battle is not won properly, it might as well have not been won at all. Benjamin Martin, the leader of the rebels, identifies the pride of the British as their weakness. The American rebels based war on victory itself and concentrated their efforts in simply defeating the British. Their sole objective is to win; they did not have the luxury of being “civil” in their war tactics. This contrast is shown very well in several scenes from the movie.…

Some years later, Charleston falls to the British and a wounded Gabriel returns home carrying dispatches. The Martins care for both British and American wounded from the nearby battle, before British Dragoons led by a ruthless Colonel William Tavington arrive and arrest Gabriel. When Benjamin's young son Thomas tries to free Gabriel, he is shot and killed by Tavington, who orders the Martins' house burned and wounded American regulars executed. After the British leave, Benjamin gives his next two eldest sons muskets and they ambush the British unit escorting a shackled Gabriel. Benjamin skillfully, yet brutally, kills many soldiers with his tomahawk. A British survivor tells Tavington of an almost unseen man rapidly killing the soldiers, earning Benjamin the moniker of the "Ghost". Benjamin and Gabriel resolve to fight the British, leaving the younger children in the care of Benjamin's sister-in-law, Charlotte. On their way to the Continental Army's camp, they witness the southern Continental Army under General Horatio Gates engaging the British Army. Having served with the British earlier in his life, Benjamin knows going muzzle to muzzle with the British is foolhardy. Sure enough, the Continentals are easily defeated and flee in disarray.…

A few stand out, however. [Warning: plot point revealed] After ambushing a British patrol that has just killed his son, Benjamin runs down the last soldier, who is trying to flee, and kills him with a metal tomahawk, hacking at the body repeatedly in his fury for revenge. He also kills a soldier by flinging the tomahawk into his forehead. A soldier has his head blown off by a cannon ball, and another his leg. A fair amount of gore with wounded having limbs amputated. Several scenes of both British and Americans killing soldiers who are trying to surrender. Civilians are rounded up and locked in a church, which is burned down with them inside. “The Patriot”, Is a dramatic and affectionate film depicting a determined man’s quest to annihilate British forces during the Revolutionary war with the assistance of his local militia. The film possesses various accurate characteristics such as some states offering freedom to African Americans serving in the war for a period of three years. Though the film does express appropriate scenes it does have its flaws. For instance, the main character Benjamin Martin was based off of five other historical figures, the weaponry was ahead of its time, and the church massacre never happened.…
