Movie Review: Enemy at the Gates.
I have to say that this is one good movie, its pretty different from your average WWII movie. Its not as propaganda based as your American war movies like saving private Ryan or pearl harbour. In this movie we get to see the war effort from the Russian communist point of view. Its like a hide and seek thriller that uses the battle of Stalingrad as a disguise for the battle of courage and determination that we see going on, on the big screen. A lot of historians say that the battle of Stalingrad was the most unpleasant and devastating one fought. Writer/Director Jean-Jacques Annaud, writer Alain Goddard, and cinematographer Robert Fraisse treat the subject matter with great care towards authenticity and entertainment value. They keep things in all simplicity, no flashy special effects or any silly bullet time. Just film, actors, and a camera.

Everything is pretty realistic and complies with the situations like the elude sex scene or soldiers getting barraged with machine gun fire. The best part about this movie is how it is based on the true story of the Russian hero Vassili Zaitsev. Even though the film is composed of mostly a serious atmosphere we get some slight comic relief from Koulikov played by Ron Perlman. the ending was greatly depicted since it was almost fairy tale like. Danilov throws his life away for Vassili, Vassili then draws out Koning and their bitter fight is ended by one shot, and then for the win Tania comes back from the near dead. Its cinema like this that leaves you thinking how can a movie so acutely portray something that happened almost 53 years ago? In terms of all historical accurateness, it has its ups and downs. We see some downers in a few scenes such as the bomber planes flying too low, as the original planes never flew that low because they themselves could get damaged in the explosions, the reflective coating on Danilov's spectacles seem to be modern, the lack of delay when the sniper rifle is fired or even continuity where

Many elements made this an entertaining film. For instance, the visual elements such as the battlefield’s special effects. Also the romance, the faith, the hope, the honor, and the triumph made this a captivating film. This film had a lot of criticism, but people need to face the fact that this is not a historical documentary, and that it is just entertainment. Yes the film’s setting is in the past, yes the film is about the Revolutionary War, and yes it deals with history, but that does not automatically make it a documentary. I would definitely recommend this to another student.…

This film did a great job of telling a very simple story, it was suspenseful and genuine. It didn't confuse or distract the viewer in any way; it simply told the story of a man and his struggle to hold his family together. I have never seen a film which is so extreme yet still so believable.…

The two sides are the light and more positive side which shows more humanity and thoughtfulness and the darker and more negative side that show the nasty and inevitable death that occurs in war. This movie is definitely not for everyone. On the contrary, people who enjoy history movies are sure to enjoy it, especially since it is fairly true to the facts of World War I. Anybody who enjoys a twist on the common “good people win” story will enjoy it as well. This movie is definitely worth…

Lyman states it has: “sumptuous visuals and state-of-the-art sound”(Lyman par 1). This shows that even for 1998, the graphics and special effects are way ahead of its time and are almost like a time capsule back to WW2 when it actually happened. Another critic agrees, stating: Though the experience it recounts is grueling, the viscerally enthralling “Saving Private Ryan” is anything but” (Maslin par 3). This shows that Maslin thinks it’s very gory, but is very worth watching and has phenomenal graphics. These statements make it obvious that it has very nice graphics and special effects; and that it has great illustrations of some of the actual battle scenes that happened in…

I looked up some reviews on the movie this weekend and saw that in some way it distorted history. Those people who said that weren’t alive when all of this happened so how would they know what happened or didn’t happen. I don’t know why people would dislike this movie, in my eyes it is one of the best historical movies I have ever seen. Also I was not alive when this happened either but I believe that these actions showed were true.…

By reviewing the United State's track record on wars, it is quite obvious that the United States has never heard of "minding your own beezwax." In Eugene Jarecki's documentary film, Why We Fight, he shares with his audience the history of the United States involvement in wars. He especially reviews the 2003 Iraq invasion and its corrupt motives. After viewing Jarecki's movie, I have to completely agree with the film maker's assertion on how Americans have been lied to by the government because of their pursuit for economic and political dominance.…

The setting was good and I have to admit the actors were outstanding! Every character was extremely well played with a good batch of confidence. Made me feel like they really had been through all of it. Gregory Burke has made an informative, entertaining and provoking play not to forget. Al parts in equal measure. Fantastic. Above all, the scene I enjoyed the most, was the one where Cammy practically gets changed. The viewer gets taken in the hand and brought through a whole lot of previous wars. That was truthfully amazing scenery work.…

The one fact that makes this classical war movie as his best ever is that his previous thriller and fictional masterpieces like Jurassic park had the ability to amaze and enthrall the audiences but in this case the story and the plot is set in perfectly, to appeal to their inner emotions and is enough to give rise to a patriotic feeling similar to the…

In the movie, I really learned about war and warfare. You really can’t understand just how heart wrenching and scary it can be while ducking bullets and watching your comrades die, unless you are there. Imagine this: you are sending off screaming bullets while dodging them. All of a sudden, you hear a thump as one of your fellow soldiers fall to the ground beside you, you’ve heard the words “retreat” many times…

The American Revolution has always been an area of interest and expertise when it comes to history for me. I had had knew that our army never played by the rules of war. All we did was write the new rules of war. The sacrifices made by the soldiers of the American Revolution were extraordinary and costly but they were all worth it. In all I really appreciate that this movie showed how war began to evolve as we began to target those in command of the battle not the one fighting in it. This fight ended with the birth of the greatest nation in the world the United States of…

I think this film did a good job explaining the story of Red October and many historical events and figures portrayed were very good and you could learn a lot from them. I had mixed feelings about the movie Good Bye, Lenin! While I enjoyed watching Alex run into new challenges and come up with new solutions in scene after scene I felt the movie became too long and repetitive. I do however think the movie succeeded as a comedy, and as a glimpse into the history of Germany. I liked how the Becker used comedy to tell a sad story because it made it easier for the audience to watch. There were also many funny characters that accentuated people’s views of the political turmoil during that time. I noticed that the older generation shared a lingering nostalgia for the East Germany of the past while the younger generation saw a whole new world of opportunities and freedom opening up in front of them. The hurdles that Alex would go over for his mother made me really connect to him as a character. He was willing to do so much for this relationship and he believed so fully that what he was doing was right that you didn’t dare question him.…

“The Great Escape” directed by John Sturges is a movie of high standard and excellence. This action packed adventure, released in 1963, takes place in Germany at the peak of World War II. Taking us back to 1942, The Great Escape documents the escape of 76 prisoners from a special Stalag (prison camp), designed specifically for them. By contrasting color cinematography with a classical soundtrack, the movie successfully blends the plot and art direction to fit the modern generation. The cast features an amazing line up of actors such as: James Garner as “Hendley”, Richard Attenborough as “Bartlett”, and James Donald as “Ramsey”. Although their performances were impressive, the show stealer was definitely Steve McQueen in his heroic/comedic role as Hilts “the cooler king” with his baseball ball and mitt.…
