Movie Analysis: Rizal
The Jose Rizal movie tells the actual life of our national hero, intertwined with the story of his novels – Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. It uncovers Rizal’s childhood until his execution in the hands of the Spaniards, as well as the glimpse of the life of suppression of the Filipino people under the Spanish friars. It also introduces his imaginations and how he viewed the Philippines during the colonization of Spain through his novels.
The depictions of violence and torture during those years in the movie, gave me a faint of heart. I was exasperated to the Spaniards while watching those scenes, and I felt like wanting to beat them like the way they maltreated innocent indios. Also, few scenes which depict some episodes from Rizal's novels made me sick and angered me more. One of which was when a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. It is disgusting to think that a priest who teaches not to sin and do good things to others committed that crime.
However, I felt happy and delighted when Rizal uttered the words “It’s done” and when Rizal fell in the ground facing the sky and looking at the beautiful sun at his last breath because it signifies that he dies victoriously and his death was meant for the torch that gave light for the independence of the Philippines. There was also a heartwarming feeling in me after seeing the scene when the dog of Rizal was set free after he was shot, believing that it implies freedom of the Filipinos.
In totality, the movie gave me the feeling of being an ordinary Filipino, began at an early age dreamed freedom for one nation. I felt apologetic after realizing how Rizal and other Filipinos sacrificed even their own life for the common good of the nation and for the freedom I am enjoying now. That behind every free Filipino today is to a man that was mistreated before. I also felt sad for Rizal because he experience prejudice yet he is not assured whether all his sacrifices will be worth it in the end. But Rizal has never lost his hope; he continued to fight for the people’s right and freedom. And yes, he was able to achieve what he aimed for at the beginning.

The film "Bontoc Eulogy" is about an American-Filipino man searching for his roots. He looked for confirmation and facts through the mountain province where he got actual footages of how the igorots are living and through different museums and records in the United States. He edited all his clips and re-enactments and made a whole narrative out of it. He made the film a story of how his igorot ancestor Marko was peacefully living in the Mounatin provinces and how he was just simply separated from his own family to be displayed for the civilized men to see in the St. Lous' World Fair in 1904. At the end he showed himself looking for artefacts and relics in different museums and end the story of himself wondering whether he will find his lost igorot ancestor or not. This film was a combination of facts and fiction. The actual footages were all real but the narrative that he made was all fiction. He may have an igorot ancestor but no one knows if this igorot ancestor of him is really part of the St. Louis' World Fair in 1904. Though the igorot ancestor story of him is just a fiction, we all know that fiction is sometimes necessary to light up the national consciousness in us. Rizal also used fiction in his time to uplift our desire for the better of our country. His novels were a great factor in building up the national consciousness of his fellow countrymen and lead them to fight for what is right for themselves and for their country. I was amazed how Marlon Fuentes made this kind of film/documentary. I love how he touched our human emotions to nourish the nationalist dream inside us by using a documentary and creating a story of how the ifugaos, our natives suffered in the St. Louis World Fair in 1904.…

Editor’s note: The following is the article written by today’s most famous Filipino historian Ambeth R. Ocampo on Jose Rizal’s death. Simply entitled, “The Death of Jose Rizal,” this historical piece by the current head of the National Historical Institute (of the Philippines) could be deemed refreshing and controversial, as it offers several unpopular and unorthodox accounts of what (presumably) transpired on the day of Rizal’s execution. For one thing, it virtually proclaims that Rizal refused to kiss the crucifix before he was executed, thereby negating the claim of other historians (like Zaide) that the national hero even asked for this Catholic sacramental. Happy reading!…

It was effective in building up emotions on its audience. It could have been a little boring in the beginning, but that is overlooked as little by little, the story gains pace, the emotions build up, and suddenly, the audience are absorbed into the story, into the words of the actors. It is a gripping experiencing that forced me to rethink and fully appreciate the talent of Asians and the beauty of Filipino culture.…

The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. A three-hour epic on the life and struggles of his poet and patriotisms. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels (filmed in black and white), so we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal. The film also through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a writer, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother and a son, thus giving a rich texture of Rizal’s character. The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. I also commend the film for its bravery in showing the evil tyranny of the Catholic Church during that time. Considering that the Philippines is a Catholic nation that is like butchering a sacred cow but alas, Abaya works her magic in depicting the suffering of the Filipinos because of the friars. This is by far the best Filipino movie that I have seen so far.I would urge anyone reading this who likes movies, to either rent it or buy it. I particularly love the last scene of the film when Rizal fell in the ground facing the sky, having his last breath looking at a beautiful sunrise- a metaphor depicting that Rizal did not die in vain. He did not die for nothing. He did not die defeated. Rather he died victorious because his death is the torch that lights Philippine independence, that ignites Philippine…

world is about the questions about our Filipino hero Jose Rizal. The film attempts to answer the questions about the life of Rizal that are vaguely being explainedin books about Philippine history while simultaneously informing the viewers about the greatcontributions he is famous for. The film emphasizes on the fact that people of the Philippinesonly learns or studies about Jose Rizal being the national hero and not facts and questions thatlies in his writings and actions when he was still alive. The directors emphasizes on the controversies in his life including his family and his loveaffair with Josephine Bracken regarding the retraction that Jose Rizal signed during his later dayswhile attempting to be wed with her. The directors tried to portray Jose Rizal as a coward thatdoesn¶t really want to be a hero, but an average Filipino person. They tried to convince themselves that he was willing to denounce all his teachings andall his hard work just to free the Filipinos just to be able to be wed with Josephine Bracken. But,because of lack of evidence, the filmmakers accepted the fact that the ultimate truth behind thelegend shall be kept a legend. The film makers also tried to add some facts that are just their mere subjectiveperceptions about Jose Rizal. They also assumed a lot of things about Jose Rizal, like thecamaraderie between Jose Rizal and his brother, the being ³Masungit´ of Jose Rizal¶s mother tothem and a lot more.Basically it¶s the life of Jose Rizal with a twist by modern filmmakers.…

I loved the photography of the film. The color of the shots evoked the kind of nostalgia I felt when I watch the Jose Rizal Film by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. When I saw the creek, the mountains, the river, the greenery and the landscape, I could feel the 19th century drawing me in.…

The film "Rizal: The Life of a Hero" and "Jose Rizal" are just some of the film formed in the previous period. The workmanship of the two films was so beautiful, so if I were Dr. Jose Rizal I will definitely like it especially the way how they approached the story of his life in putting it into the film. In the film "Rizal: The Life of a Hero" the distinction of this film is based on his written diary since childhood and some of the left letters that he gave to his family and friends. Presented here are some of the great events of his life and the incident gave reason to motivate him to become a hero. Noticed that it almost shown here all of his important achievements in all his life and especially the sacrifices he did for our country. Therefore, this film should only be the first one to watch because as a student I can appreciate it more clearly. As for the film "Jose Rizal", disclosed here that our national hero is truly talented as well as he used his own ability in a good way. It is making two of his famous novel titled El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere. Rizal became a doctor, a writer, a lover, an artist, a genius, a brother, son and a friend. Thus, all of them give high assessment of Rizal’s character. Despite much criticism and anger in him of the Spanish because of his novels made, Rizal still chose to sacrifice his life just to fulfill his desired freedom for the people against the Spanish colonial rule in…

Remember Los Viajes (The Travels) written by Dr. Jose P. Rizal? It is a perilous and exciting travels of Rizal across the globe before he returned to Philippines and captive by Spaniards, same as the film which we chosen to be similar to our topic, Social Influence. People were lavish with praise for Ninoy and the very well-made documentary (directed by Jun Reyes and produced by Unitel) about him. We shared our awe and admiration for this man, whose visage we knew quite well from the P500 bill, but whose life remained a bit of a mystery to our young memories. What did we really know about him? We weren’t even born when he was assassinated. The Last Journey of Ninoy is an important film that introduces him to a new generation. It follows him on his return to Manila (reenacted by Bam Aquino) and pieces together Ninoy’s life from his humble beginnings to his tragic death. Narrated from Ninoy’s point of view and interviews of his beloved wife Cory supplemented by photos and TV clips, we see that Ninoy was truly an exceptional and inspiring man.…

I was in third year high school when I first read the novel and saw the film version of thefamous Noli Me Tangere. I had encountered the characters, memorized the chapters andappreciated few of the episodes in the novel in some way. Since then, I haven’t paid muchattention to what this novel was truly about and how its film version affected my understandingof the original text. It was just yesterday when I had a second look at the film that made meconscious of some things I did not notice and value back then. This second chance allowed menot to simply see a novel become a film but to examine several angles such as itscinematography, characterization, how the film held the novel’s plot and the different things itimplies about Filipinos. In the most superficial way of seeing it, almost everyone noticed and complained aboutthe film’s poor cinematography. Besides it being in black-and-white, the poor sound quality anddim picture made it even more dull and unexciting. I was not able to understand several lineseither because the dialogue sounded rough or the captions were invisible. There were several poorly lit scenes that gave me a hard time to understand what was happening. However, Iunderstand that the film has existed for many years now. It is not surprising that a viewer fromthe present generation would find such film old, poorly made and even funny.Secondly, more than the audio-visual angle, the film also has issues on characterization. On one hand, I can say that the character of Crisostomo Ibarra was not well portrayed. The mainactor did not seem to fit the image of Ibarra which I believe is the reflection of Jose Rizalhimself. My expectation of his character (educated, principled and brave) based on the writtennovel was different from how I saw him in the film (weak, emotional and dependent). It almostappeared that…

Upon seeing the movie, I was very thankful I was not born that time because I might be killed of my family. Luckily I was born in the 1991. I realized that it’s not easy to live that time full of chaos and harm. I was thankful that Marcos was stepped out from the office and replaced by our Mother of Democracy, Corazon Aquino because it ended his motives to put the Philippines under his power. The first time I heard we’re going to watch Rizal’s life, I admit, I don’t really get interested because for me why try to discuss lives of people who already passed away? Their time on earth already ended so why reminisce it? What I’m thinking is that I already appreciated what he had done to save us against those foreign dictators who stole our freedom during the 18th century so the idea of letting them rest in peace inculcates on my mind.…

The actors and actresses delivered their parts very well and the music was also noticeably great. The director did a remarkable twist on the plot, on how the Filipino folklore was added. Yet as the play continued to the next act, the language they spoke continued to confuse us audience including I. As a student I admit I have a poor Visayan vocabulary and can only speak the basic and understand it. Many of the scenes were really difficult to comprehend and decipher.
