Movie Analysis

The setting in the Great Gatsby is important because there are two different places Nick lives in. First he lives in Minnesota but he decides to move to fast paced New York to learn more about the bond business. He rents a house in West Egg district of Long Island. West Egg is a wealthy yet unfashionable area that is populated by newly rich people. Unlike West Egg, the East Egg side of Long Island is the fashionable area where the upper class lives in. The two settings in this book, Minnesota and New York are completely different because New York is full of business people and everything happens so fast, and Minnesota is more slow and out in the country.
In this movie Nick Carraway moves from Minnesota to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn more about the bond business. He decides to rent a house out in West Egg district of Long Island. Next door to Him lives Jay Gatsby, a mysterious man who lives in a gigantic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night. Nick drives out to East Egg where he dines with his cousin and her husband, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and there he meets Jordan Baker and begins a romantic relationship with her. In the story Tom has a lover, Myrtle Wilson. As the summer progresses, he finally gets an invitation to one of Gatsby’s great parties. He then learns that Gatsby is madly in love with Daisy and he asks Nick to help him meet up with her. After a short time Tom starts to get suspicious of Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship. However one night they discover that Gatsby’s car has struck and killed Myrtle. When they find out who was the driver Tom lets Myrtle’s husband George know that it was Gatsby when it wasn’t him, and George shoots and kills Gatsby and himself.
Gatsby is the protagonist of the story because he is a fabulous and wealthy man living in a gigantic mansion in West Egg. He’s famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night but no one knows much about him or where he comes from.
Tom Buchanan is the antagonist because he prevents Gatsby from living happily. Tom is wealthy, restless, and cruel. He tries to stop Daisy from leaving with Gatsby because he doesn’t like him. Gatsby’s dream is also an antagonist because he had a dream of being with Daisy. His actions propelled him forward and clouded his judgment leading him to death.
Daisy is a minor character in this story, she is the girl that Gatsby is deeply in love with. She fell in love with Gatsby and told him that she would wait for him even after he came from the war. Until Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him. She then lived as a beautiful socialite in Long Island. She is cynical and behaves superficially to hide her pain at her husband’s constant cheating.
The climax in this movie is when Daisy and Gatsby finally meet up at Nick’s house. Gatsby had asked Nick if he can arrange for Daisy to have tea with him and Gatsby wanted to show up and see her. When daisy came to his house and saw Gatsby there she became very quiet and started crying, and Gatsby becomes very pale and scared to talk to her because he thinks she doesn’t love him anymore.
Gatsby is living the American dream; he makes himself seem like a self-made man. He is very wealthy and throws huge parties every Saturday night. Daisy is a damsel in distress, she doesn’t really decide anything, more like Tom decides everything for her and takes advantage of her. She just likes to sit there and look pretty, no one really listens to what she has to say anyways.
There are several themes in the Great Gatsby, one of them being society and class. There are many wealthy, educated people who have a lot of leisure time and have little concern about people who are not rich. America is presented mostly through the scope of class: the rich, the poor, and everyone in between are identified by how much money they have. They play a great length of memories of the past in this book. There is a lot of lies and deceiving in this book, as Gatsby is a very mysterious man and hides his entire past from everyone because he wants to be known as a wealthy man.
