Seven years ago, filmmaker Kirby Dick released an eye-opening documentary entitled “This Film is Not Yet Rated.” In it, Dick launched an investigation into the secret review board responsible for the classification of films under the Motion Picture Association of America's umbrella ratings policy. In addition to arguing that the MPAA reacts more favorably to films financed and backed by Hollywood studios while penalizing independent filmmakers, “This Film is Not Yet Rated” highlights the hypocritical attitudes centered on violence and sex, particularly sexual acts depicting homosexuality or female empowerment. Not surprisingly, the MPAA responded by slapping “This Film is Not Yet Rated” with an NC-17 rating of its own.…

Movies are a great way to escape reality and slip into a “fantasy land” for a couple of hours. They allow us to relive our childhood and often bring back positive and negative memories. Movies are a way to relax and just sit back to enjoy what the film has to offer. All movies have a rating such as, G, PG, PG-13, and R. Typically, a six year old is not going to be viewing a film or show that is targeted for teenagers. Although that idea seems absurd, six year olds are indefinitely watching these programs.…

Due to many violent attacks of teenagers and children, the government decided to crack down on the age for watching certain rated movies. They feel the limit to these graphic movies will limit the violence they see and that can potentially inspire some of these children. They enforced photo identification to be seen before allowed to purchase a movie ticket for rated R movies and if under 17 you must be chaperoned by a legal guardian. The government and many others believe that this policy and enforcement will keep it safer for many costumers and reduce the violent attacks from teens. The government states that a R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. In addition, parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children.…
