Mother Metaphor
It feels great, helping out little children in their day to day activities. Anything from teaching them numbers and colors to taking them outside to play feels wonderful. It fills me with joy to interact with the little balls of joy. That is why I look forward to every Wednesday when I get to help out at COTS. I love walking through those doors and encountering no response. Then Mrs. B tells them to say hello and a smile graces my face. I would rather not equate my work to that of a mother, but in part that is what I do. Just like a mother who teaches her child, I am there helping them to understand. The feeling of unconditional love , is alien to me. Sure my mother had it towards me but I have never felt that way toward someone else, until …show more content…
Mothers are involved in their child's life and the child is completely dependent on their mother. This is the figure that I have become, although I am one of many surrogate mothers who these toddlers rely on. I have to feed infants and coax them into accepting the oatmeal that I offer. It is much harder than I imagined. My mother always tells stories about how difficult raising a child is. You have to pay attention at all times to the child so that they don’t hurt themselves or get into trouble somehow. I did not appreciate how difficult this really was. I always assumed that there was some degree of exaggeration but there were no lies in what she told me. On that Wednesday alone I realized how difficult it really is to raise a child. You have to constantly watch them, tell them what to do, punish them if they do not respect your authority. It is tough. The first few weeks of service was easy compared to what I am doing now. I am “ very interactive” with the children, constantly making sure that they do not do something idiotic. Especially Madison, she is the biggest of the trouble makers. She does not listen to what you say, when you want her to sit down she is standing up. You tell her not to go there, guess what, that is where she is. Even though she is the biggest pain in my backside she is the most influential she is the one who made me realize what

Children are so fresh and should be the happiest of us all. It absolutely breaks my heart to see someone so worn and torn at such a young age, whether it be a fictional character in the realm of Law& Order or a child I’ve had personal experience with. Over the summer I got matched with a little buddy. Her mom is a single parent, works, and is putting herself through school with two children in elementary school. My buddy would hardly talk to me at first even though her mom said she has never been shy in her life; you could tell she didn’t understand how I really fit in the picture. But now, just a couple months later, she has completely come out of her shell and even skipped her way to my car the other day just to go hang out at my house. This is why I want to be a social worker. I want to use my education and opportunities to help these children and their families through the rough patches, and be a support for them. If no one else will pay attention to them, I will. If no one else is going to tell them how spectacular they are, I will. If no one else is going to help them realize their full potential, I…

Her home was nothing more than a shack that was not safe for her or a newborn. We met the homeowner’s mother and learned that Hope had worked very hard her whole life, but it was obvious she had not received many of the blessings we had been given. She was a single mother hiding from the abusive father of her child. During our week we worked very hard making improvements to her home. Possibly because I was older, or because of the adult crew leaders, I was working with very little instruction and thinking on my own to find solutions. I was problem solving, leading, being creative, and didn’t even think a thing of it at the time. It wasn’t until after this week of accomplishments and hard work were over that I realized I was no longer a child any longer. I could impact the lives of other who were facing life and death, strength and weakness, sadness and…

    Metaphors In The Family

This week we’ve learned about the impact that metaphors have on our lives. In Lakoff’s “The Family”, he discusses how metaphors have shaped our moral and political views. He compares the “The Strict Father Model” to “The Nation-as-a-Family” and explains the role they have in shaping our nation’s political views. This comparison encouraged me to analyze other metaphors that seem similar, but are in fact viewed very differently. For this example, we will compare “Life is a Journey” versus “Life is a Game” – both refer to life, but are very different. Are we in control or is there a set design for our lives? Although these two metaphors are different, they do have quite a few similarities and will like to explore all sides of them.…

My mother got really sick for about a week and could barely even stand up. Since she was not able to, I played the mother's role and it was challenging. One challenge I needed to face was looking after my little sister. I fed her, changed her clothes, helped her with her homework, made her feel better when she was upset, and put her to bed. I was also supposed to help my brother with his homework and make his breakfast, but he was not as challenging because he is older and more mature. In addition to all that, did my chores and took care of my mother. I was very busy and overwhelmed taking care of my siblings, mother, and myself. That week of playing an adult’s role made me realize how grateful I am to have a mother who takes care of me in the same way I took care of…

As a professional, I promote child development and learning. I meet the children where they are and build off where they are individually not just developmentally because every child is different; and just because a child is not at the same level as another child doesn’t mean that they are not accomplishing anything. I praise every milestone regardless of how big or small, and I encourage the parents to do the same.…

In his most recent play, Dead Metaphor, George Walker uses strong character development to strengthen his claim that the internal struggles of each character affect society’s balance of good and bad. Dean, the main character, recently returned from the war, where he served as an army sniper, in order to start a family; however, he is having problems finding a job due to his background with the army. He is soon faced with a difficult decision when three people in his life ask him to commit murder including his own father who asks Dean to kill him after a tumor is discovered in his brain. The social worker, Oliver, who finally finds him a job also hires him to kill his wife, a very conservative and powerful politician who in turn hires Dean to kill Oliver. Although he is just trying to support his family and lead a successful business life, his military past continuously catches up with him.…

As a childcare provider, I help children gain a sense of self by labeling their cubbies with their photos, names, and birthdates. I help them recognize and pronounce their names. I include activities and books about different cultures and different home environments. I provide activities that they are capable of completing and materials that are age appropriate, I encourage children to share stories about their family. I ask them about their family, culture, and gender, I respect and recognize their emotional and physical needs. I help them with activities if my help is needed. I show empathy toward their feelings. I encourage them to talk about their feelings, and how they are different, and give them appropriate ways to express them. Whether they are sad, mad, or stressed. I comfort them. I respect if children have different religions and find ways to get them to participate in activities. I encourage them to be independent, to serve themselves, use the restroom, put things back where they were, and to care for their classroom environment. I first show them how to clean, and then have them do it.…

I loved being able to walk into the classroom and see all of those children run up to me with smiling faces saying that they miss me, asking me if I will be staying the whole day or asking me if I could play or read with them.
