It was a Thursday morning in November. I woke up, got dressed and got ready to take a taxi to 42nd Street in Manhattan with my mother. I was so upset that I had to leave to upstate somewhere I had never been and the thought of living there? Lord knows I wanted to throw up so badly. When I got to 42nd Street I saw the guy that I had an interview with. He said, “Hello Nikki. Are you excited to go to Job Corps?” I lie and said yes. You could feel the tension in the car. I soon realized how similar we are and how he had already gone through what I’m going through as a teenager. We talked about life and how we would help my mom if Sadie did happen to die. Sadie was my mom’s first dog so we knew this would hit her hard. When we arrived at the vet and Sadie needed a blood transfusion which is risky but my mom would try anything to save her. Sad about Sadie, my mom was anxious to see what would happen. While Sadie was undergoing the blood transfusion my mom told my brother and I to get the other dogs so they could say goodbye to Sadie just in case. Again, we were in the car and started talking. It was crazy because those two car rides made my brother and I closer than we had ever been before. My brother gave me advice on my friends, boys, and my parents. When we got back to the vet we were just in time, Sadie had just gotten out of surgery. Our vet has done it once again. Sadie was going to be alright, but we would have to keep a close eye on her for a…

After introducing myself to all the girls, the 12 girls dragged me to their room with so much excitement. Walking into their room, I had to stop and take a deep breath. I knew the orphanage wouldn't have much, but I never imagined how little they really had. Their room looked like it belonged to an old abandoned house. The ceiling caved in; it smelled of an old dusty attic and had nothing in it but 12 beds, 3 dressers and a couple dirty stuffed animals just lying around. Some girls had pictures of when they were babies, some didn't have anything. I stood there silent. Tears balanced on my eyelids because at that moment, I realized that I have been so ungrateful for what I have, while other young, beautiful girls around the world have nothing but a bed and a stuffed animal. I think about all my clothes, shoes, friends and family that…

I was walking along the road with my dog by my side, when all of a sudden he darted off across the road, and round the corner. I started shouting at the top of my voice, “BORIS, COME HERE!” To my amazement a black Labrador came strolling round the corner. As Boris started strolling across the road, a black car came round the bend. All I saw was Boris being pushed over, and the car rolling over him. Through the streaming tears in my eyes, I saw a figure walking out of the car, and bend down to look under. I could not watch, I covered my eyes, the only noise I could hear was my screaming, and uncontrolled breath. Then I heard the car drive past me and full speed. I was horrified that the person hadn’t said anything to me, not even sorry. I eventually pulled myself together, and walked over to where I last saw Boris. There was no mark, no blood, not even a dog. Then I saw in very small writing, a mobile number scratched into the concrete, obviously done with a stone. The recent rainfall hadn’t washed it away, meaning it must be from the person in the car, who killed my dog.…

As I sat there, playing, the door suddenly banged open. My mom stood there anxiously with fear in her chocolaty eyes. I knew something tragic had occurred for she never came home early. She grabbed my forearms and pulled me up with a jolt and snatched a plastic bag from the corner and stuffed what little clothes and toys I had in it. My own brown eyes were filled with tears, but I didn’t let them fall. She dragged me along as she moved and on her way out, she shut the door with a thunderous bang. Who would have thought that that was the last day I would ever see that little one room garage house again.…
