Most Dangerous Game Cinematic Analysis
“Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure….” That was General Zaroff’s reason for hunting humans. The justification was used in both the short piece of fiction The Most Dangerous Game and its cinematic adaptation of the same name. However, there are ways that the versions differentiate. This shows that when a film adapts a short story, there will be both similarities and differences. When adapting a piece of literature, one of the main factors that stays constant is the plot. With a differing storyline, the theme may be of the story may be skewed. For example, Rainsford uses the same traps during the game in both the short story

A case in point, the characters differ greatly from one to the other. In the story, the three characters that play a prominent role are Rainsford, Zaroff, and Ivan. However, two more characters play an important role in the motion picture, Eve and her brother, Martin. Also, the extra characters change some parts of the literary work. To illustrate that point, Rainsford finds out that Zaroff hunts people in the film by catching him taking Eve’s dead brother to his trophy room. In the story, Zaroff tells Rainsford about his game by explaining his boredom with hunting and animal’s inability to reason. Beyond that, Rainsford takes Eve with him to hide from Zaroff during the hunt in the movie. But in the piece of literature, Rainsford is by himself during Zaroff’s expedition. In addition to the characters, the denouement contrasts tremendously. As proof, Rainsford hides in Zaroff’s bedroom in the short story;however, in the movie, he walks into the chateau with Zaroff in the main room . Likewise, the ending in the story is not resolved. In the film, Zaroff dies and Rainsford escapes with Eve on a boat. The differences between the two are very distinguishable, but they add an original twist to the storyline.
