    Such as My Beloved

This novel “Such as my beloved” by Morley Callaghan the main character’s of this novel is Father Dowling, Midge and Ronnie. Throughout the last half of the novel Father Dowling has shown consideration and concern for the two girls. Even though he has developed love interest with them, he is able to communicate with them and interact with them, even though it seems that throughout the novel he does have a sexual interest in them which contravenes his beliefs as a priest. The reason why he shows so much consideration is because he believes in himself that he can change their lives from being socially acceptable prostitutes for a living into being the best they can be with pursuing a career that is well known. Father Dowling believes that Midge and Ronnie are a good character with their personality and kindness which develops throughout the novel, he also believes helping them also benefits himself “The more I love and think for those girls the closer I am to all these people,” (Callaghan 163). They can achieve so much more than just being two prostitutes meaning a career that is more socially acceptable. The thesis in the character development to the story is that Father Dowling shows consideration to those he believes should deserve a second chance, in this novel Father Dowling gives up the ultimate sacrifice, his life, he has for the goodness of those two girls whom nobody gave a chance to, but him.…

    Beloved

In Beloved, 124 Bluestone Road is not only a setting but it takes place as character in the novel as well. 124 is seen as a character throughout the novel because it‟s where the beginning of Beloved‟s haunting came into play. 124 also becomes the character Beloved due the various haunting that readers see. At first, the house at 124 Bluestone Road was nothing significant besides the home of Sethe and Denver, but it soon had a new meaning once the spirit of Beloved began to haunt the house. Sethe‟s home became something different when she was forced to kill her unborn baby to „free‟ her from slavery. From the very beginning, Morrison allows the reader realizes that 124 Bluestone Road plays a major part in the story by opening the chapter with: “124 was spiteful. Full of a baby‟s venom. The women in the house knew it and so did the children. For years each put up with the spite in his own way, but by 1873 Sethe and her daughter were its only victims.” By telling the reader that Sethe and Denver were the only victims left, it makes the readers wonder what kind of victims they were supposed to be. They were the victims of Beloved, the daughter that was killed by Sethe so she wouldn‟t have to go through suffering. 124 also relates to the daughter named Beloved because it‟s the third child that was born, yet, was also murdered, hence the missing „3‟ from the address. Beloved is also seen though the text at the very beginning because the „spiteful‟ „baby venom‟ refers to her. “In her account of the haunting of 124, Morrison employs most of the manifestations traditional to stories of haunted houses: noises, displaced objects, smells, lights, a brooding atmosphere, and the sensitivity of an animal to the presence of the ghost ("Haunting, “Encyclopedia;"Haunted Houses," Man, Myth, and Magic).” (Schmudde 409) By relating 124 to a haunted house, we are able to understand why Beloved is left behind haunting Sethe and the others. Beloved represents the…

The novel Beloved, written by Toni Morrison in 1987, is filled to the brim with symbols and imagery. All of which hint towards the divisions of the class, and the similarities across race in certain classes. In fact, there appears to be a pattern, where the lower and middle white classes tend to be kinder and more accepting to the freed lower slave class, which indicates that different races, if they belong to the lower classes look past their racial differences to help each other.…

    My Favorite Food

After gaining an unappealing 3 or more pounds over the years, one would think that I would quickly learn to put down the tacos. However, when the opportunity rises for that scrumptious, slow simmered seasoned beef, crisp green lettuce, rose ripe red tomatoes, yellow aged cheddar and hard crunchy shells come across my path, I just can’t resist. I should have to say no-more, than “I LOVE TACOS”! Just typing these words reminds me of last Friday night, while preparing my tempting tacos; I recalled my first taco experience which was very bland and tasteless. To me an authentic taco should have a full blown blast of Mexican seasonings dancing around in your mouth. Mine are infused with a bold medley of 100% ground beef with ethnic seasonings, fresh cilantro, along with plenty of extremely tasteful toppings, and let us not forget the fresh flour tortilla fried shell, and a dollop of sour cream. However, several people simply prefer bland beef with cheese whiz, and a few shreds of lettuce. Later on that evening, we finally got to munch on those completely “NON” fat-free tacos, and we were in complete Heaven. The way we looked and the mess we made while eating them would probably shock most. However, we really indulge in the thought of “enjoying our food”, and sometimes you just have to dig in, and get dirty.…

It’s easy to see why before there was science native tribes of the northern hemisphere believed the aurora borealis to be supernatural. Most cultures thought the lights to be spirits of the dead; warriors still joined in battled long after the wars they fought in over, and ancestors reaching out from the heavens trying to communicate with the living. In ancient times most people were afraid of the lights. Children would be brought inside when the mystifying flames of the auroras spread across the heavens, for the lights could descend and cut their heads off. It was a common interpretation during medieval times that northern lights were an omen of war, disasters, and plague.…
