Toni Morrison’s Recitatif is a story of two young, racially separated girls that grow up in an orphanage together. Because the girls were young when they first met, they knew they were different from each other and they knew their moms wouldn’t approve but they didn’t let it affect their friendship. They became the best of friends and began to make a lot of memories at a very young age, most of them highly affected by their emotions. When it came time for the two to move on from the orphanage, also known as St. Bonny’s, they vowed to write everyday and stay in contact. This story seems to be all about race but the author never tells us which girl is white or black. Morrison gives little hints but never a straight answer to the big question.…

Being rather young, he did not really know what was happening, but he could tell it was bad. Later, this affected the early parts of his life, and became a long lasting nightmare. Viewing life through a lense that focuses on race and physical features, rather than one that looks deeper than the skin distracts you from seeing all someone or something has to offer. In the story “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, the author purposely tests the reader as to what lense they are viewing the story through by never revealing the race of any individual character. In the beginning of the story, when Big Bozo first introduced Twyla and Roberta, Twyla says, “My mother won’t like you putting me in here,” and, “we looked like salt and pepper standing there.” (204) Readers may often see this imagery provoking piece of dialogue as meaning Twyla is white. Readers often jump to this conclusion as it is a stereotype that, in earlier times when…

Morrison in her essay 'Rootedness' emphasises the importance of the ancestral myth, she writes bluntly, 'when you kill the ancestor you kill yourself.' This is certainly true for Macon Dead in Song of Solomon. Macon has rejected his heritage for materialism and as a result remains a most discontented man despite the wealth produced by his materialistic values. Macon's unhappiness with his materialistic life is seen in the novel when he 'turned his back and walked slowly towards Pilate's house' where he feels the 'irritability of the day drain away from him'. However Macon does not will himself to change and thus continues his bitter life. Milkman on the other hand perseveres because he rejects the materialistic values injected upon him by his father when he embraces his personal and ancestral past this in turn permits him to connect with his community and allows him to truly live.…
