More than Basketball At first glance, basketball may seem like an easy concept to comprehend. It’s pretty basic; two teams compete against each other to shoot a ball in a goal more than one another, scoring more points, thus winning the game. Simple enough, right? Well, basketball goes a little deeper than that. It is quite a bit more than what meets the eye and can even get a little complicated at times. However, sticking to the basics is what will be done in this essay for getting in depth would consist of very much writing. It is also seemingly impossible to go too far in detail on paper as oppose to actually experiencing the game in person and truly understanding it. Starting from scratch, it only makes sense to discuss the rules. Two teams, consisting of five players each, play at one time. A team may have more than five players, but only five are permitted on the court at once. These teams try to score by shooting a ball into a hoop that is elevated ten feet above the ground. The team with the ball is called the offense, while the team without the ball is called the defense. The offensive team tries to score the ball in their basket while the defensive tries to steal the ball, contest the players, or just prevent the team from scoring in general.
In order to move the ball, the players must either pass the ball to another player, or they may bounce the ball on ground as they move. A player cannot move the ball without bouncing it, otherwise known as dribbling the ball. If a player has the ball and moves without dribbling the ball, this is called a walking or travelling violation and the other team gets the ball. If a player stops dribbling, said player may not dribble again. If the player does dribble again, a double-dribble violation is called, and the other team gains possession of the ball.
