Examine the moral values in Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Confucianism which has formed the basis for human behavior. Give specific examples.
Moral values serve as standards of right and wrong for people, guiding their decisions and actions. Moral values also determine what people value and how they express this in their lives. People learn moral values from religions, governments, and other people or even from themselves.
Morality in Islam addresses every aspect of a Muslim’s life, from faith aspect, physical aspect, spiritual aspect, political aspect and also historical aspect. It is universal in its scope and in its applicability.
A Muslim is expected to not only be virtuous, but to also enjoin virtue. He or she must not only refrain from evil and vice, but must also actively engage in asking people to eschew them. In other words, they must not only be morally healthy, but must also contribute to the moral health of society as a whole.
The Qur'an defines and sets the standards of social and moral values for Muslims. A lengthy passage in the Qur'an represents the fullest statement of the code of behavior every Muslim must follow.
From an Islamic perspective, worship God is the purpose of human life. To achieve peace in this world, Muslims are leading by this worldly life in harmony with the Divine Will, and everlasting success in the life of the hereafter. Muslims look to the Glorious Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet as their moral guides.
The Ten Commandments in the Qur’an represent the fullest statement of the code of behavior every Muslim must follow. These are to make Muslims to be a perfect person. The Ten Commandments are: 1. Worship only God
2. Be kind, honorable and humble to one’s parents
3. Be neither miserly nor wasteful in one's expenditure
4. Do not engage in 'mercy killings' for fear of starvation 5. Do not commit adultery
6. Do not kill unjustly
7. Care for orphaned children
8. Keep one's promises
9. Be honest and fair in one's interactions
10. Do not be arrogant in one's claims or beliefs
For example, Malay women must always keep their body and hair covered as a respect to other people. In Islamic belief, only husband has the right to see the wife’s body. And this is also the respect to God as follow the code of behavior.
Christianity is the world’s biggest religion, which has about 2.1 billion followers. The source of moral values for many people is Christianity, and it built many of the foundation moral values for Western Civilization. The moral values that taught by Christianity are: • Forgiveness -> Christians are expected to forgive other people when they are hurt by them. The value of Christian forgiveness is special in that it is extended to even the worst offenders, the ones who are the most difficult to forgive. The reason Christians are expected to forgive others is because God has first forgiven them, for offenses that have greater eternal consequences than anything a fellow human being could do to them. • Humility -> The virtue of humility can take many different forms, from simple modesty to the extreme of being totally without ego. Christian humility begins with the realization that humans are insignificant corollaries to God, who created them. Therefore, humans can make mistakes and sometimes need correction. The value of humility prepares Christians to accept criticism and learn from it. The Catholic Encyclopedia defines "humility" as a quality by which a person recognizes his own defects and willingly submits to God and his commands. Humility shifts people from the natural human focus on ego to a focus on service to God and love for people. • Individualism -> Individualism is a value cherished by many groups in the modern world, some of which are not religious.
