Montresor's Liability Of Pride
The capability of pride is evidently seen in the character Montresor. It is very clear that Montresor takes a lot of pride in himself when he stated” when he ventures upon insult I vowed revenge” (165). Because Montresors is seen as a man with lots of pride, he decides that he can not let himself down because he would look weak. With this said Montresor decides to plan his revenge carefully. Montresor’s aspiration to seeking revenge is affiliated with his families motto need citation for this idea about Montresor “Nemo me impune lacessit” which means “no one provokes me with impunity. Montresor’s family motto makes it clear that “Montresor identifies himself with the golden foot, ponderously triumphing over the lashing serpent”(Stepp, 448).

As time is passing by in the story, Montresor reveals how obsessive and insecure he is. Montresor decides to get revenge and kill Fortunato just for a mere insult, and only because of his weak and unconfident personality. The insult and the other thousand injures mention before could have been just part of Montresor’s insecure nature. Furthermore, Fortunato does not expect that Montresor is seeking revenge or sees him as a threat. Besides, Montresor plays a great role of a caring friend until the end of the story. Then, I believe Montresor is bragging about his crime because of his statements. For instance page 177, the text states, “Nemo me impune lacessit.” This means “Nobody attacks me without punishment.” What Montresor means, is that Fortunato isn't going to get away with what he did to him. I think in this statement he is bragging because first off,…

Through his words and subsequent deeds we can also identify the trait of sadism in Montresor. “A wrong is redressed when retribution overtakes its redresser,” claims Montresor. He continues, “It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.” Montresor's aims are clear. Redress his perceived wrongs, punish the man who he feels wronged him, and make himself known to his offender as the one who has killed him. And while doing so, make him suffer in a way equal to the pain Montresor must have felt when insulted by Fortunato.…

His emotional response was of controlled anger. Montresor may have had anger but it was hidden anger. Montresor didn’t show it in anyway to hint that he had loathing boiling inside him. He expressed this by saying, “ The thousand injuries of Fortunado I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed my revenge”. Montresor was a very solemn man, for he would not show his greatest anger, but he will avenge what caused it. This is stated when he said, “You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would…

Pride, jealousy and the concept of killing someone go back to the time when people first came around. In the article, by Renee, she states when thoughts of revenge are developed in a person’s mind, it causes him to go insane and there is no time for second thoughts (1). The very first sentence from the story is “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” this clearly depicts the major theme of the story, enrooted in Montresor’s mind (DiYanni…

"The thousand injuries at the hands of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge" (Poe, 173). Montresor is so convinced of the righteousness of his convictions that he "must not only punish but punish with impunity" (Poe, 173). Montresor also states how he must not fail to "make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong" (Poe, 173). Montresor's words prove how his prideful obsessions have deluded his mind enough to believe that Fortunato's wrongs justify his agonizing death. Furthermore, Montresor believes he should go unpunished for his…

He easily gets angry and is very sensitive about other’s people opinion about him. He is vain and proud, as a result unable to stand an insult, which, to his mind, damages his reputation. Because of his vanity and pride, he treats a supposed insult, coming from Fortunato to him, as a serious hurt, although Fortunato does not even suspect, that Montresor can want revenge for something he has done. On the other hand, for Montresor, this murder is something quite natural. He says at the beginning of the story: “It is equally unrepressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him, who has done wrong” (p.1). Montresor admits that, in his opinion, his revenge is equally painful for Fortunato as the insult is for…

Montresor is a character that let his anger get out of hand which led it to control his life causing him to spend his time trying to find a way to get impunic revenge. Montresor kicked off his duplicitous plan of retribution by greeting Fortunato with gratitude. “I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation” (1). Montresor's lust for power is indicative of his megalomania. When Montresor gets power he takes pleasure in it, even in obscene situations. When Fortunato is chained up and becomes un-intoxicated he starts to realize what has happened and starts to rattle the chains, Montresor remarks on the event, “the noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones.” Montresor finds joy in hearing a chained man struggle so that he may not be murdered. Once he gets this power over Fortunato he basks in it. Likewise, Mathilde shows some characteristics of megalomania, however it is in a less grotesque way. When Mathilde got to the ball she got what she wanted more then anything, to be in power and to be the best. “She danced with intoxication, with passion, made drunk by pleasure, forgetting all, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, in a sort of cloud of happiness composed of all this homage, of all this admiration, of all these awakened desires, and of that sense of complete victory which is so sweet.” Like Montresor, when she finds the power over others she basks in it, dancing and taking every advantage of her success. Although the two powers over others are so different, they both take the time to enjoy it, as well as having strived so hard to get this power.…

The first thing I realized about Montresor was his vengefulness, or his desire to harm. At the opening we read that Montresor has vowed revenge against Fortunato. The story opens with “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe, 1). It is there we see the animosity Montresor had toward Fortunato. In the beginning Montressor also said “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe, 1). That too revealed the resentment he had towards his friend.…
