The narration in the story gives readers the impression that Montresor is insane. Readers hear this story from the first person, from Montresor himself, and hear the way he perceives every event and every detail in its entirety, all from his point of view without anyone else's interfering. He refers to Fortunato as his friend, a clue that he is not acting in his right mind. If Montresor had a good motive like Fortunato killing someone close to him, he would refer to Fortunato as his enemy. The reader also feels the pain of Montresor when he is erecting the wall over Fortunato; Montresor does not feel right in what he is doing. He even tries to call Fortunato's name before he lays the final stone to see if he is still alive, wondering if he could turn back and change his mind before it is too late and Fortunato is dead.…

The first thing I realized about Montresor was his vengefulness, or his desire to harm. At the opening we read that Montresor has vowed revenge against Fortunato. The story opens with “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe, 1). It is there we see the animosity Montresor had toward Fortunato. In the beginning Montressor also said “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe, 1). That too revealed the resentment he had towards his friend.…

Montresor is one of the main characters in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” is a cunning, sensitive, and sinister character. Firstly, Montresor has a very Cunning personality. He assumed that one of Fortunato’s weakness were his pride in his knowledge about wine. Therefore, Montresor frequently baits Fortunato by saying, “there is Luchesi” (Poe 110). This hurts Fortunato’s pride therefore he remains to acquire the amontillado. Furthermore, Montresor is rather sensitive. For instance, when he says “upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe 108). Montresor is planning to Kill Fortunato for “the thousands [of] injuries” (Poe 108) caused upon him by Fortunato. The pain Fortunato caused him was not physical but, verbal indicating…

Montresor is already confined at the start of the story by his grudge. Montresor wants to be free. To be free, he takes actions to his evil plan. Even though, Montresor successful seeks revenge to escape his confinement, he ironically becomes even more confined by his feelings of guilt. Montresor, appears to carry out most of his evil deeds with absolutely no feelings of guilt. He even seems to be relishing the experience. However, there is one moment when Montresor shows hesitancy, “For a brief moment I hesitated, I trembled. Unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess." As Fortunato’s screaming intensifies, Montresor’s sudden wavering feelings implies that his guilt is emerging. To begin with, Montresor is an unreliable narrator. I think this because in the beginning of the story,(174) Montresor does not give any background or evidence of being insulted by Fortunato. The texts says, “ The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could...” Usually, when you are blaming someone that has done wrong to you, you would give a background, or evidence that they are in the wrong. My reason number two is that Montresor exaggerates his feelings and actions in the story, which is also why I believe he is bragging about his crime. “There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time...I well knew, to ensure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned.” (176) Here is a perfect example of Montresor's bragging. He's basically saying that, he the best of the best, the head chief, and everyone knows when he says to do something, they do it.…
