Monkey Bars: A Short Story
I stood there with my hands on the monkey bars. I tried to move my hand to the next one, but couldn't find the strength to do it. "Hurry up Lyndsey! We want a turn too!" I looked behind me to see many kids waiting in a line. "I can't go any further!" Rebecca rolled her eyes at me. It started to make me feel bad inside, but I knew I couldn't keep going. "Just drop!" I looked down at the ground, and tears filled my eyes. It was too far down to drop. I would hurt myself trying. "It's too far. I can't do it." A tear ran down my face. "Whimp! whimp! whimp," all of the kids started to yell. "Please stop!" I closed my eyes for a minute. I'm not a whimp! My fingers started to slip, and I squeezed my eyes tighter. I fell from the monkey bars and hit …show more content…
"What's your name?" The boy and office lady looked up at one another. "I'm Mrs. Tators." I looked at her with a baffled look. The nurse started to feel my leg, which made the pain even worse. I looked down and squeezed my eyes shut. "And what's your name?" I continued looking down for a moment, until I heard a reply. "Well I'm Mrs. Tots." I shot my head up and smiled. Mrs. Tators and Mrs. Tots? The boy started to laugh a little, trying to cover it up. I looked at him with a smile on my face. "And your name is?" I pointed at him to make sure there was no mistake this time. "My name is Mason." Finally an answer! "Thank you Mason for all your help." He smiled at me then left the room. The nurse walked across the room to get some things from the cabinet. I looked down at my leg, and was amazed by the outcome. Cuts and bruises had formed after minutes of falling. My entire leg had swollen up like a balloon. It was obvious why it hurt. "Alright Lyndsey, I am going to clean your cuts alright?" I nodded and held on to the edge of the table tightly. She gently dabbed my cuts with rubbing alcohol. The pain increased and I tried not to move. I bit my lip hoping the pain would go away

At the end of The Monkey and the Monk, the pilgrims acquire the scriptures and, thus, fulfill the task of their journey and please Bodhisattva. Yet, she points out that “within our order of Buddhism, nine times nine is the crucial means by which one returns to immortality. The sage monk has undergone eighty ordeals. Because one ordeal, therefore, is still lacking, the sacred number is not yet complete.”(Wu Cheng’en, 470) Even though the sage monk performed tasks that were supposed to lead to immortality, Bodhisattva suddenly says that his deeds were not sufficient unless the pilgrims performed one more ordeal for the perfect number of sufferings. This behavior of Guanyin is problematic – why would she suddenly insist…

When I arrived to Brunswick Novant Medical Center, it was a nice day, the sun was out and the flowers were in bloom down the pathway leading up to the main entrance. When I walked into the hospital, wearing my scrubs there was a cool chill to the air much different from the outside. It was pretty chilly in there and the building smelled like hand sanitizer. The main lobby was very welcoming with chairs and magazines on the little end tables. The receptionists at the desk welcomed me with an inviting greeting, “May I help you”. I went towards the hall on the left that led to the elevators that took me to the second floor, where the nurse I was going to interview worked at.…

The Monkey’s Paw, written by W.W. Jacobs, is a short story about the consequences of messing with fate. Mr. White is a simple man living with his wife, Mrs. White, and his grown son, Herbert. One evening Sergeant-Major Morris, a family friend back from India, visits them and shows them a monkey’s paw he had gotten there, saying that it will grant a man three wishes, but that it was made to prove that when you mess with fate, bad things happen. Even with the warning, Mr. White uses the monkey’s paw to grant his wishes, and soon pays the price. I think the theme of this story is basically, “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.”…

Quickly, the hospital secretary called an expedient nurse from the back room and in a flash, Sally was suddenly brought to a private room. Unfortunately this week we were unable to have a session with Cindy. Before we started our stretch class Cindy had fallen out in the parking lot and rolled her ankle. She fell forward and cut her hand as well as bruised her cheek. When we found out that it was Cindy who had fallen we immediately went over to her to see how she was doing. She was icing her ankle and had a covering over her hand. During this time there was discussion of what should be done in Cindy’s best interest. Cindy left the YMCA to go to the doctor and receive stitches in her left hand, and have the rest of injuries checked out. While she was leaving we noticed her walking seemed to be OK, however she expressed to an employee that her ankle was bothering her. When Cindy left she was enthusiastic about returning next Friday and we told her we would call her during the week to see how she was doing. Specifically we will have to address how her hand is healing, if she has pain while walking in her ankle, as well as how much pain she has from the bruise on her face. We will also have to find out what she feels her level of functioning is with her ankle and hand, as well as what her doctor said she should and should not be doing. When Cindy left the YMCA we were able to observe Brittany and her client,…

The Chief of Vascular surgery, Dr. Blauhard, strode confidently down the central corridor of the operating theaters. Passing the open heart surgery rooms and the new hybrid theater he knew that his patient would be going to sleep in room 12, his room. The patient was lucky to have him as her surgeon. He had been vice-chairman of vascular surgery at a major university and had published extensively in his chosen field. He was viewed as a star. But he was not respected or revered or even liked by the staff at his new hospital. In fact, his behavior at the new hospital had been outrageous. He yelled. He criticized. He threw instruments. He humiliated nurses and technicians and even environmental services workers. He was insufferable to work with and for. So as he pushed through the doors into operating room 12 a sudden quiet fell and bodies tensed. The patient, scheduled for a popliteal aneurysm repair was fast asleep and intubated, sleeping deeply inhaling the agents that allowed the surgeons to invade and repair. The aneurysm pulsed quietly in the right leg, awaiting repair. The right leg was clearly marked across the front of the knee. But prior to prepping, the patient was rolled from the supine position into the prone position, effectively shifting the right leg to the left side of the operating table. As such, and with no one saying anything, the left leg was prepped and draped. The wrong leg was prepped and draped. But no one said anything. A surgical timeout was held but no one spoke up. They were all quite afraid to say anything. The surgeon asked for his scalpel and carefully incised the wrong leg……

I considered the gravitas of my actions only once before deciding to bandage a part of my body. I had wondered if girl I sit next to in Sociology lecture would believe the stories behind my injury. I had wondered if my friends would notice the injury and try to aid me as I walked around the bustling city. I had wondered if they would be annoyed and the constant reference to my injuries. I began to question myself as I wrapped the bright blue bandage around my knee. Around once, then twice, and fastened it securely on the back of my leg. I had spent an hour trying to figure out which body part I should bandage. The wrists were too obvious, my back to hidden, my left ankle too obscured by my new Adidas superstars. So I settled on my knee. My knee could play a central character in thousands of stories that could have caused injury. I began to picture a tumultuous decent down the cement stairs of 55 E 10th street, a catastrophic encounter with a street sign marking the fire line as a no-park zone, an awry Uber making direct contact with my kneecap in the middle of a rainy overcast afternoon. I push those thought away instead focusing on the Yoko Ono’s words. I must only make up the story when someone…

Before going to get Alec up I had a read through his care plan which told me he needed assistance with two carers with the stand aid it told me he could get quite agitated when finished I went with the other carer to the sluice and collected aprons and gloves for infection control purposes and a commode. On arrival at Alec’s room I knocked the door and said who it was and waited for a reply” you must treat people as individuals and respect their dignity” (NMC2012), on Alec’s reply I entered the room with the other carer we both introduced ourselves and explained what we were in to do “you must ensure you gain consent before you begin any treatment or care” (NMC2012). While the other carer looked out Alec’s clothes for the day giving him a choice of two outfits to pick from I had put on the tap to heat the water chatting to Alec as I got everything organised once organised the other carer and I put on the apron and gloves to prevent infection and moved the stand aid next to the bed using the correct moving and handling techniques we got alec to sit on the edge of the bed taking the strap for the stand aid we checked that it was fit for use. When we climbed the tree; my friend accidentally stepped on my arm and I fell and broke my leg and right hand. At first, I didn’t feel anything because of shock, but then, severe pain pierced the broken bones. My friend’s grandmother called the ambulance. I was scared when, in the hospital, doctor put a cast on my leg and hand. I imagined what my mom was going to say, I was afraid that she would be angry but she wasn’t. She said “I told you a million times you shouldn’t play like this and that, one day, you would break neck. You are lucky that it’s not a broken neck. Please don’t play games like this anymore.” I understood that mom was right and was trying to warn and protect me; the result of my disobedience was a broken finiteness’s.
