“Hey, Andi!” Riley howled as Andi walked through the door. “Let’s go up to my room.” They ran up to Riley’s room and on the bed was Riley's cat, Mrs. Chubbs.“Mrs. Chubbs!” Andi shouted, running toward her to give her a big hug. At that moment Riley had a great idea.“Let’s try to train Mrs.Chubbs!” Riley exclaimed. Andi was down with the idea, so they got an American Girl Doll tutu, but she was too fat for it to fit around her waist so they decided to pretend she was a circus cat and put the tutu around her neck. Then they got treats, knowing she wouldn’t do the tricks without a reward in return.“Let’s start out with the easy stuff,” Andi stated, “Sit.” Mrs. Chubbs didn’t do anything. “Um, sit,” Andi said, seeming slightly frustrated. “Maybe she wants to do something harder. She is a smart cat.” Riley suggested, “Let’s try to have her jump through my…

As I readied myself for the moment of truth I got into position and properly placed my hands evenly on the bar. In those brief moments before actually lifting I thought to myself What if I can’t do this? My thoughts were suddenly interrupted as Ivan egged me on to get started. I took a couple of deep breaths and pushed up as hard as I could. Gravity then took over and made 135 lbs. seem like two tons. I was barely able to do one rep before I put the weight back on the rack. I felt mentally crushed as if the weight had fallen directly on…

I rolled the bar forwards, once, twice, three times... I slowly began to extend my legs, and drive my hips forward. The bar began to bend as it cleared the platform, as it rose up my legs. Quickly, at first, but then... Slower, and slower. And slower. The bar reached a full stop as it hit my knees, and my body began to tremble from exertion. Cheers of reassurance, of confidence came ringing in from all sides, but I knew it was lost. I continued to try and work the bar up, as my body shook more and more... Until I collapsed downwards, the bar slamming into the wooden platform, making the old wood creak. The weight room spiraled into a stunned silence as I simply stared at the weights for a few moments. A few pats of reassurance came, but I waved them off. At first, I was as stunned as they were, but then I was angry. I was angry at myself for not getting the weight up, at my friends for not pushing me hard enough, at anyone I could be angry at. I couldn't understand why I the weight simply wouldn't go up, I had pushed myself to my limits and past them countless times - I couldn't have worked any harder. But then it hit me, and I learned my lesson from that dead lift. I learned to accept failure, probably one of the most important lessons I could learn, and I had the luck to learn it…
