Monarchies In Ancient Greece
Monarchies in Ancient Greece were rare and usually very much like Tyranny but with a benevolent hereditary ruler in place that everyone liked and ruled in the general interest of the people. (Cartwright, 2013) In stark contrast would be Tyranny. This is where one ruler seized power, usually in a violent way. They would not rule in the best interest of the people and were more interested in personal gains.
Macedonia had a mixed government with a Monarchy and an Assembly. They had a ruler that shared power with the assembly. Polykrates was a tyrant in Samos (530-522 BCE). After seizing control with the help of his brothers, he killed one and exiled the other brother.
Oligarchies are a form of government controlled by a group of a select few.
