Moment of Greatness
Adriana Munguia
English 12
28 September 2012
The Shape Issue
“I refused to accept it,” stated Adriana Munguia, the 42 year old, now retired, runway model as she makes a trip down memory line. Little did she or anyone know, she would rejuvenate the fashion industry like no one ever before. Now, besides being one of the most influential women in the fashion industry, she is the owner of the now high ranked fashion industry for petite woman.
“I was only ten when I first came to the U.S and everything around me was just too beautiful. ‘I’m in love’ I thought.” A smile filled with content was resembled on her faces as those words escaped. Adriana proceeded by telling she lived in New York in where she graduated from Central Islip Senior High school and continued her studies In John Jays School of Criminal Justice In NYC, from which she earned her masters on criminal justice. “I wasn’t satisfied,” Adriana blurred out, “So I decided I’d go for a degree in Forensic Science,” she continued. She claims she had, as she described it, a “passion” for crime scene investigation, “but there was something else” she quickly added, which she revealed to us as a “love” for fashion, modeling, and photography. “…and that same love had sparkled it all.” There was a sigh that continued that sentence. Of grief it was not, it was as if her saying that filled her inner self with peace and pride.
According to Adriana, her journey started way before she ever realized what her new achievement would be. “I was considered to be ‘pretty.’ At least that’s what I was told very often by friends and peers. That alone was a great encouragement to pursue modeling, which I somewhat tried… but quickly gave up,” Adriana said in a quite annoyed tone. During her years in high school she was highly interested in fashion, found beauty in expressing oneself through the use of clothing, and most important, believed that anyone should have the right and chance to be involved in the fashion industry.

Rodriguez was a victim of this definition of beauty and went through extreme measures to be like women on television. In her short story “Breaking the Model” she explains the influences that led a young Hispanic girl to become anorexic and bulimic trying to be something that she was not. “As a young teen, I shared the dream of many girls: I wanted to be a model and an actress” (189). These dreams did not conjure up in a girl’s head; they came from the images girls are constantly exposed to. Rodriguez continues, “I felt the media’s and society’s images of women were more responsible” (191). Her modeling agency even suggested that she “study the models in Teen and Seventeen and watch Beverly Hills 90210 to ‘get an idea of what real models look like’” (190). Since cultural ideas and norms are directly reflected in portrayals of women in the media, the Western culture has a deep influence on young girls trying to find their own…

The summer after my freshman year in high school, I had the opportunity to go to a forum in Washington, D.C. The forum discussed law and crime scene investigations (CSI). Although the forum was held for approximately six days, it changed my life. I had always yearned to be in the CSI field, but through the mock trial, investigations and the people whom I was able to meet at the forum I was able to fully establish my feelings about the future since I was able to experience the veracity of the…

My school doesn’t offer a criminology class, so I instead went with psychology and forensics as alternatives. This is where I had discovered what had sparked my interest in mysteries. While I did enjoy watching the detectives solve the mystery, what I was most passionate about was when they profiled the suspects to learn the motive. In both classes, I am most intrigued by learning about not the actions of the defendant but the psychology behind it. I have refined the televised perception of what I want to be into what I am realistically interested…

Deciding what someone is going to spend the rest of their lives doing can be hard, but for some it has always been clear. Forensic Anthropology is an interesting career for me because of the excitement of working at crime scenes, the mystery behind each bone, and the knowledge that justice has been given to the victim. This topic is valuable because knowing what, where, who I will be working with in the future is necessary so that I don’t regret deciding to become a forensic anthropologist.…

These aptitudes, especially the capacity to relate, my way to deal with treatment in the field.…

Thich Nhat Hanh once said, “Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.” I owe my sanity and happiness to this wonderful man who helped me overcome the fear and anxiety that plagued me on an everyday basis. Yet, my actual lollipop moment came from a very different source- one that was a complete accident.…

In the past five years I have graduated high school, uprooted my life twice, almost died once and somewhere along the line realized what I want to do with my life. Following my first uprooting and near death experience I realized that family is something I have taken for granted throughout my life and need to get back to them to make amends. When I moved back home, I saw just how much my sisters not only missed me, but needed me in their lives. Now that I have left them again I feel terrible, but know what I can do to help them and others. Those events, and many more are where I gained a little more clarity as to what my purpose or life meaning is in this world.…

This has to be one of my favorite assignments since becoming a student at Kaplan. I have been interested in the Criminal Justice since I was a small child. I come from a long line of military, however, my passion has always been Criminal Law. I remember even as a young girl in the 2nd grand, I had dreams and aspirations of becoming a lawyer. Now that I have an ex husband, and two children of my own and find the justice system a little “Leewayish” (if that’s even a word) on dead beat fathers, my dream has now become to be a “Ball busting District Attorney for deadbeat moms and dads. I am sick and tired of seeing the same faces in court every other month with the same stories that they cant find work, or they cant see their kids, or they were helping with the flood cleanup. I am sure you can feel my frustration! Other avenues of the law that I have a particular interest in is detective work, private investigation and cold case files. I am also an avid photographer so I would love to take that passion and put into crime scenes, while I pursue a law degree. My best friend Shonda, who I have interviewed for this assignment, is now a detective. She absolutely loves her job, but is currently back into school to further herself into a law degree. I love the cold cases being solved after all hope is lost, on television I know, but still yet. The Jaycee Duggard story gave me a new passion for cold case, when she was found years later. After her kidnapper left her emotionally scarred, she was still able to return to parents who never gave up hope. For my interviews I picked a street cop turned detective to see where her thought process was ethically on the questions at hand. For my second interviewee, I picked a K9 officer who was on the meth task force, but due to meth running a rampant race with the unemployment level sky high, I had…

My interest in the Fashion Marketing program at Parsons, was innited in college during the time we were starting to study the different fields of marketing. Since I was little I’ve always had a very big interest in the fashion world, observing the different trends and how every country has different styles is fascinating for me. My biggest role model fashion wise is Oscar de la Renta, I identify myself with him because we come from from the same country where the fashion industry can still be considered in diapers. He has known how to overcome the many obstacles that have been presented to him throughout his career, obstacles like the lack of support at the beggining, or the credibility he had to win through his career.…

Even though she is known as Coco Chanel throughout the whole world, she was at once called Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. This trendsetting French woman was born in August 19,1883 but began her career as a fashion designer in the 1909. She was all about women’s rights and creating simple but comfortable clothing. As I interviewed her, she told me “ Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” I believe her those words exactly, many people do not appreciate the hard work of designers and those who started a revolution like Coco Chanel.…
