According to the Commission on the Review of National Policy toward Gambling, gambling in the United States grossed over $40 billion dollars in 1995 (Dunstan, 1997). Professor I. Nelson Rose describes three waves of gambling during the history of the colonies and the United States. The first of these waves began during the start of this great nation and lasted until the mid-1800s. The second wave was at the end of our Civil War and lasted until the early 1900s. Finally, the last wave started during the Great Depression and is still going strong today. I believe a fourth wave has already commenced with new technology paving the way. Watching sports has been a significant aspect of America’s culture and pastime. For instance, the NFL now practically owns a day of the week during football season, and the final minutes of playoff games can cause us to stay awake until two in the morning. We love watching sports, but we love betting on sports even more. Companies, like Fanduel and Draftkings, have sprouted among our love of betting and competition. They host daily betting games, which cost only a few dollars and enables sports fans to challenge themselves in predicting the outcomes of games. Although each game costs only a few dollars, the probability of winning is low, so the cumulative fees can cost fans hundreds annually. In result, I believe that daily fantasy sports is…

One must look at the external environment at first. The Gambling industry in Ireland was flooded with operators in the boom times. Land based gambling in 2007 was valued at €1.7 billion. (www.glai.ie accessed on 29/11/2011). A tax levy of 1% has perhaps had a factor on the profits of some companies but one sector of gambling that cannot be ignored is the online element to it. Huge growth levels have been witnessed in this sector. The employment levels and operating profits of the industry have remained stable in general. The market however is very open to volatile changes such as the volcanic ash cloud in 2010 that resulted in the cancellation of many sporting events. The future of the industry is not definite. 2012 will see the introduction of more legislation. This change in regulations should ideally reflect societal factors. It is hoped that stricter laws for online gambling will be introduced as well as measures to protect young people. Licensing laws will also change where the minister will only administer a licence to those “who satisfies the Minister in relation to his personal suitability, financial resources, tax compliance, previous record…

The subject of gambling has been a hot subject of debate amongst politicians for many years. The concept of people waging something of value for something not guaranteed is something that baffles many non-gamblers. Long before Christopher Columbus discovered North America gambling was practiced quite often amongst Native Americans (Sheppard, 2012). In fact one can trace the origins of gambling even farther back into biblical times. This is evident by the biblical verses in the Bible about the dangers of gambling and why individuals should not gamble (King James Bible Online, 2013).…
