Modern Technology vs. the Simpler Times
Modern Technology vs. the Simpler Times
What was life like back in the simpler times? Everyone can agree that life back then was extremely different from what it is today. There were no phones, or e-mail. No Facebook, cars, dishwashers, or microwaves. In fact if one could travel back in time and see what it was they might think they were sent to some other planet. All of the advancements have improved human civilization and helped people move forward. Life today is much better than it was back in the simpler times by far because of our technological advances. Many technologies have advanced in the past hundred years. Computers advanced at a faster rate than any other. Helping billions of people, more specificaly student, get connected, be productive, and get things done (Evinger). The ones we notice more, or take for granted the most, are technologies that help people with day to day things. Simple things like washing our clothes were not so simple back then. It used to be a whole day ordeal with a washboard and lots of manual labor, but technology has made it very easy. Another technology that we use daily is the refrigerator. Our lives revolve around food and in the simpler days you didn’t have a fridge to pull some sandwich meat out of and whip yourself up a quick meal. And you couldn’t hold raw meats over night because they would go bad. You would have to go to the store every day and get what you needed for that day. And going to the store was a mission of its own. Transportation back then was not as easy as it is today. All that people had back then was horses. Horses went much slower than today’s cars and your butt would hurt after riding for a while. A trip out of town took a very long time compared to the half an hour drive it takes today to get to the next largest city. And going overseas used to be a voyage that took months. Today it takes less than a day to get from Portland to Europe. All of these things that make life easier today give us more

All of our technology has come a very long way over the years. From the very first phone or television that was invented, it is unbelievable how these same devices look and function in today’s world. Times change and people change with them. Over the last two decades, there have been significant advances in technological innovations. Because of the creation of laptops, cellphones, tablets, and more, information is much more accessible to the average person. Today, the average person spends about 7 hours of their day using some form of media technology. (Communications Market Report) The statistics are even higher for children and teenagers, who spend about 53 hours using media technology a week. (Generation M2 Report) The excessive use of media technology can be attributed to anything from communicating on social networking cites to participating in tutorial sessions for classes. No matter the reason for using media technology, education officials have observed that the way young people learn has begun to change. For example, students (k-12) no longer have to read through encyclopedias to find out facts; instead they can simply search for facts on the Internet. Because of the change in learning, education officials have advocated for change in the traditional education curriculum. They want to move away from the traditional way of learning---books, paper, and pencils—to a more technological based curriculum.…

To start with, people were not able to travel such long distances in such short period of time. The planes were not that popular then because they used to be a very expensive means of transport. Nowadays, we have become very mobile. We have fast and comfortable cars and more and more people also travel by plane. Moreover, in the past people had to work much harder as they did not have tools which made their work easier. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and other machines. In the past the conditions of living were not as comfortable as they are now. There were not bathrooms and running water in many houses, besides many people could not afford household appliances like fridge, TV set or vacuum cleaner because they used to be luxurious goods. Another difference between living now and in the past is the fact that nowadays the access to education is much easier. In the past, there were fewer schools and the quality of the education they provided was much poorer. Besides, nowadays it is much easier to find the educational materials that you need thanks to the Internet. Another difference is that in the past there were not that many sources of entertainment. Therefore people used to spend more time with their friends.…
