Modern Love 'And Hills Like White Elephants'
Male / Female Relationship In a male/female relationship it is said that both of them are doomed to understand each other. Its partially true because being different genders one will always think differently. There will always be arguments in deciding one thing or another. Two examples that show how decisions are being made by both male and female are in “Modern Love” and “Hills like white elephants”. Both genders have difficulties in agreeing with things, but eventually one of them will agree and give up deciding to go with whatever it is their loved one wants. Usually that is when the relationship between a male and female couple is good. Even though there is differences in a relationship, they tend to make things work out because of the …show more content…
Not understanding the opposite sex does not mean we no longer are attracted to it. Even though it is hard, we are attracted enough that we end up trying to figure out how to make the opposite sex happy. That is the way it always is in a relationship between a male and a female. When in a relationship there are arguments and difficult decisions to make. Trying to figure out the right way to go can sometimes make the couple argue and fight. In order for the couple to stop arguing one of them will need to give up and go with what their loved one says. This happened in the story “Modern Love” by author T.C Boyle. This story is about a couple that had different opinions about germs and becoming sick. The female by the name Breda was obsessed with germs and becoming contemned by anything. He did not like how obsessive she was, but loved her and put up with it. He accepted every thing she wanted. He did not understand why she was the way she was, but because he loved her he accepted her for who she was and avoided arguing with her. This is how a relationship between a male and female should be, but because of differences that both sexes have relationships struggle and unfortunately

When I look at the topic male-female communication, the first thing that comes up to my mind is that man and woman must have a very good communication, because there are only men and women in the world. But as I think a little bit deeper, there is something different between a man and a woman, different types of talking styles, different ways of thinking, and different point of views. For instance, if a guy thinks that he spends too much time on his girlfriend, but somehow she might think that he doesn't have enough time to be with her, so that if they are not willing to communicate to solve this problem, they will break up very easily. So when two different kinds of people get together, problem and conflicts will appear between them. There are two articles "His Talk, Her Talk" by Joyce Maynard and "Man To Man, Woman To Woman" by Mark A. Sherman and Adelaide Haas. Both articles talk about the same topic male-female communication.…

In the age of puberty the communication once had from children to teens changes. As a teen, the male student naturally started hanging out with more males than females. This became the difference between male and female conversations. As males get older they bond more in experiences rather than conversations. Unlike their female counterparts who engage in conversation to bond. Females when communicating like to have others listen to the problem only, unlike males who like to talk about problems and give a solution to the problem rather than just listen to the problem. This is where the problem manifests for communication between male and female counterparts within the teenage…

Another explanation came from Duck. He proposed another model with 4 stages. The first stage is the Intrapsychic Phase in which a person simply thinks about the negative aspects in their partner or relationship however doesn’t discuss them. They may weigh out the costs and benefits of that relationship which could also involve a determination to put things right. The second stage, the Dyadic Phase, is where the person confronts their partner about the problems and actually discusses them. Generally this could involve arguments and inability to take responsibility from both partners. The third stage is the Social Phase, which extends beyond partners talking. Instead they may tell friends/family their problems. Generally in this stage, the partners are deciding on what to do, or if the relationship is over. The last stage is called the Grave-dressing Phase. This stage involves communicating a socially…

The short story “Hills Like White Elephants” was written by Ernest Hemingway. The author seems to be a minimalist where he does not provide explanation about the very issue why the couple is unhappy and annoyed with each other. To have a more deeper understanding on the literature, I have looked up a translated version of it and according to a Japanese translation of the very story, it said that the problem was about her pregnancy and that the man wants her to have an abortion. It was then understandable that why the author might have left that information out of the story because, having an abortion is not something you would talk in public which in this story’s case, they happened to be in some kind of bar. I believe…

Hills Like White Elephants, written by Ernest Hemingway, and Irwin Shaw’s The Girls in Their Summer Dresses are quite similar in the fact that they both depict a couple’s conversation. Even though the two conversations aren’t about the same thing, they both are the result or the expression of tensions felt by the characters. However, the characters’ reactions and the future that we can imagine for the couples are different in each short story.…

The Relational Dialectic theory is valid when one is identifying the source of conflicts in relationships. In such situations, it is clear that the thoughts and the actions of those in a relationship clash. It helps establish a binding position for discussions, because of the “contradiction between connection and autonomy as primary strain within all relationships. If one side wins this me-we tug-of-war, the relationship loses” (Griffin, Ledbetter, & Sparks, 2015, pp. 139). It occurs that when people are in a relationship, they have to accept one another and create terms of engagement. But in the pursuit of these terms, one can create tensions with the internal values gained from experience. On the other hand, aspects of the Genderlects Style occur when men and women converse. While women will be interested in cultivating emotional depth, men will avoid sentimentalism. As such, their discussions will be based on facts and fewer assumptions. Men also seek to accentuate status, but women tend to focus on social bonds. The Genderlect Style extends cultural theories to the genders asserting that “understanding each other’s style, and the motives behind it, is the first step in overcoming destructive responses” (Griffin, Ledbetter, & Sparks, 2015, pp. 438). For example, it uses the same principle that explains the difference between Americans and Chinese in interactions and applies the same elements to gender…

In reading the article “Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication” I was intrigued by the information that was given, the article touched on some important issues about relationships and how when you are communicating with your spouse, lover, or fiancé how we automatically assume that there is a mutual understanding, or that we automatically no. But more than half of the time you find yourself upset that you couldn’t get your point across or that your counter parts just doesn’t listen, that’s when the statement “that’s why we argue so much”, comes into play. When the truth is that we are just not understanding each other either I am speaking while he’s speaking or he just stop listening altogether until I say something to touch a nerve. I have had several arguments with my fiancé because when we are having a discussion it seems to almost always go to the left. I have tried to explain to him my feelings on this matter that’s been like a thorn in our sides since we began dating, I can’t get him to understand how important it is for my children to see their father and I express a good healthy relationship without the arguing and fighting, but each and every time my ex-husband comes around my fiancé and I always fight because he thinks that my ex-husband wants to rekindle a relationship or have an altered motive. When I try to explain to my fiancé that there’s nothing of the sort I find myself saying all of the wrong things and making all of the wrong points which in the end makes the situation worse. My fiancé and I are really still learning each other and communication seems to be our weakest point although I try be very clear on the points that I’m trying to make it seems as if we are really from two different plants “Women are from Mars” This is…

Reflecting on this article, I agree with its contents. As we get closer in a relationship, we dismiss the fact that we could be misunderstood by each other on certain situations or certain scenarios. “Getting close to someone appears to create the illusion of understanding more than actual understanding” (Health Day 2011). When this happens, we can become angry with the spouse because we expected them to understand what we meant or said. As couples, we want to believe that we are on the same page all the time because we are so close. Whether we are face to face, back to back, in another room, or on the phone with each other, misunderstanding can and will happen without further questioning from the other spouse. When something is said, it is the other spouse’s responsibility to make sure they are clear in what they are hearing. Without this tactic, there will be misinterpretations between the spouses. This creates unhealthy communication between the spouses.…

In his article “Moving to the Girls Side of “Hills like White Elephants””, published in 1995, Renner discusses an alternative conclusion that can be made through analyzing “Hills”. He believes that most critics have not paid enough “attention to the development of the female character” (27). Also, he suggests that Jig has been “underestimated considerably” (27). It is clear that a decision has been made by the end of the story, but it does not plainly say what. The reader must use the minimal information provided to interpret what they think happens. Hemmingway only provides this minimal information in order for the reader to be able to come to their own conclusions. In “Hills”, the majorities of critics have interpreted this information and have decided that the girl gives in to the American and has the abortion. Through close looking of the story, it is more likely that the woman refused to have an abortion and the American “acquiesces” (27) to her desires. Renner‘s analysis is both a valid and extremely interesting way of seeing this story. He effectively relates his reasons for being on “the girl’s side” to the reader with well used examples from the primary text.…

In a 1979 excerpt from his book, The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Mating and Dating, clinical psychologist, Albert Ellis discusses the social relationship between males and females, and the differences between them. Ellis asserts it is a “fact that most males are much more interested in sex than love.” He urges women to accept men as who they are: less romantic, single-minded, and sexually demanding. Furthermore, he insists it is reasonable for a man to have these distinct manly traits and it would be pointless for women to fight a man for being the way he is. Moreover, he believes it is normal for a man to be “interested in sex, in their work, or in themselves.” I, however, disagree with Ellis because I believe that men are capable of being changed by a women. Men are more than just animals who desire sex.…
