Ancient Rome V.S. Modern Day America
When comparing Ancient Rome to the Modern Day America, it’s difficult to find a reason for what’s different between the two. Even though the two are separated between over two thousand years of history, Ancient Rome has helped shaped to what is America today. Rome’s ancient culture is very much like the American culture and has many similarities. Some examples on how Ancient Rome is similar to the Modern Day America are the Social Classes, Republic System, and Language.
One example on how Ancient Rome and todays America are similar, are the social classes. At the bottom of the social hierarchy in Rome would be peasants or beggars, then the patricians which are the people on the top of the social classes like the Senators. Like Ancient Rome, America has people at the bottom of the social class and at the top. However, instead of the Senate being at the top, the President is. After the President it’s the Vice President, then the Secretary of State, and then rest of the government follows. After the government, the rest of the people are last. Ancient Rome had social classes just like the ones we have today in modern day America.
A second example on how Ancient Rome and America today are similar is the Republic system. Ancient Rome’s Republic system lasted 500 years until it ended as a result of the generals becoming too powerful and overthrowing the system. Just like Rome, modern America has a republic where the people elect the president and elect the leaders of the government. Americas Republic system has a Senator which are two people from one state and who are elected by the people of the state to help make laws for that certain state. America has a President. The President is the person who is in charge of the entire country. The President also makes sure everyone in the country stays safe. Ancient Rome and Modern Day Today both have

Roman and Greece empires governments were similar in ways but differed in others. While both Romans and Greeks started as mere city states they went off in different directions with there civilizations politically. They also both had democracies but in different forms. They each had there own way of government and had different military styles, largely because of their location, which is also why Rome was more centralized and Greece was more dispersed. However, geography did not stop both Rome and Greece from being patriarchal, and thriving.…

The book Are We Rome? The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America by Cullen Murphy alludes to the ancient comparison through the picture of Horatio Greenough 's marble statue of George Washington on the book’s cover: Washington looks like a Roman Caesar in his toga. Today "triumphalists" celebrate the comparison and want to export America as a model to the world. "Declinists," on the other hand, lament the similarities and warn about over-extension, arrogance and fall. But are we Rome? According to Murphy (2007), "In a thousand specific ways, the answer is obviously no. In a handful of important ways, the answer is certainly yes" (p. 197).…

One political similarity between the civilizations was that both had a central government. Many things would have been more difficult, Rome would not have been able to enforce their laws and Emperor Wu would not have been able to strengthen the Great Wall of China. A political difference was that the Roman Empire was able to trade easily since it was near a body of water. The Romans had access to North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. However, the Chinese were only able to spread inland and it took them a lot more effort to trade.…

The Greeks and the Americans have a lot in common, such as their architecture, living style, and democracy. But the main aspects I will talk about are death and burial, victory and conquest, Gods, goddesses, and heroes, Animals real and imagined, Greek democracy, Architecture, Living style, American cities/Greek names, Epics and actors. All These aspects are divided into nine portions. The portion with the most similarities is death and burial. In the time of the ancient Greeks death came at a young age, men died in war/battle, and mothers died giving birth. Till now young men die at young ages, men die at war, and mother still die while giving birth. The second aspect is victory and conquests. Victory and conquests also has a lot of similarities to the Americans. Victory was the goal; training/conditioning was the most important preparation for war. Similarly today victory is the main goal for the Americans and training/conditioning is still the most important preparation for war. The third aspect is Gods, goddesses, and heroes. People in Greece believed in multiple gods and goddesses. Some people in America are still polytheistic and believe in the Greek gods today. Some of the Greek heroes were Hercules, Achilles, Theseus and many more. Just like the Greeks Americans today also had heroes such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther king. The forth most similar aspect is the Greek democracy. Athens (a city in Greece) had the first world known democracy called direct democracy. Direct democracy is simply known as “rule by people”. Direct democracy gave all citizens freedom and equality. The citizens of Athens could also vote. Similarly to the Athens, Americans today have a different type of democracy in which we vote for people to lead us. The fifth most similar aspect is the Greek architecture. In fact the Greeks invented three architectural designs that American still use today. The ancient Greek worked, lived and worshiped their gods in these…

While many of his comrades perished from malnutrition and the elements Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca used his skills at bartering to gain respect among the native peoples who inhabited the island off the coast of Texas. (de Vaca, p 14) He often thought of rescuing others (Oviedo) who were worse off than himself even though they would end up rejecting his offers. (de Vaco, p 15) When he became separated from his companions he ingeniously found ways to build fires and locate straw in which to cover his naked body for warmth, though he did come close to burning himself up when his straw caught fire with him in it. (de Vaca, p 18) He also had a strong belief that God controlled his actions and would see him through all kinds of adversities. (de Vaca, p 16) He mentions that some of his Christian companions perish when their boat capsizes, yet he manages to live by the grace of God. (de Vaca, p 11) It is through God’s intervention that he uses his gift of healing to build trust and instill confidence in the local natives after years of misfortune. “No one whom we treated, but told us he was left well; and so great was the confidence that they would become healed if we administered to them, they even believed that whilst we remained none of them could die.” (de Vaca, p 20). De Vaca shows concern for the natives and his courage and fearlessness enacted change in how they interacted. He displayed a sense of equality in helping to save the lives of others. He did not allow his feelings of past experiences to prevent him from doing the noble thing. He worked through his past and made a better future for the people and for himself.…

    Roman Government

Although the form of government in the Roman Empire changed several times over its thousand year history, many parts remained the same and it has served as a model, inspiring the founding fathers as they created the governmental system of the United States of America almost 2,000 years later. Scattered around seven hills in the middle of the Italian peninsula, Rome began as a simple village of wooden huts. As it grew, it became governed by a monarchy, with a king having complete control. This lasted for over 200 years until the king was overthrown and a republic form of government was developed. Although controlled to a large extent by wealthy land owners and nobles, the general population was given an increasingly larger part in how the empire was run. This form of government worked well and the Roman Empire prospered. However, social unrest in the first century A.D., coupled with several military defeats, ended with Julius Caesar taking control and declaring himself dictator for life, ending the true republic form of government. Assassinated a month later, Rome then entered a period of rule by an emperor, which lasted until the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D. The Roman Empire lasted longer than any other government in the western world and it has provided the foundation upon which the government of the United States is based, along with providing valuable lessons for future generations.…

History is constantly changing over time, we learn things to either educate us about our past or to not let history repeat itself. One of the biggest thing that constantly changes is our country, the United States of America, Thomas Paine writes Rights of a Man (1791) arguing that America is a country where concord is least expected. Although Paine makes a compelling argument it’s hard to look at this country today as a land where “the rights of man” exist? Is it a land where the rich aren’t privileged? He characterizes America as this great country that our government created "on the principles of society and the rights of man," it is able to overcome the differences, however, his description of America in 1791, does not hold true today.…

It's the year 509 B.C. and the Romans are finally no longer under the rule of the Etruscan king. They create a republic where they elect citizens to rule. The aristocrats or patricians dominated while the plebeians had almost no say in the government. Plebeian and Patrician were kept apart and where prohibited to marry each other. Plebeians then began electing tribunes who could veto acts passed by the senate Plebeians slowly gained more power until they were able to hold the position of consul, while Patricians still bought power using their wealth. Sometimes in emergency situations the consuls and senate would elect a temporary dictator until the crisis was over. A great example is a farmer who left his farm in a time of war, became dictator and stepped down after defeating Rome's enemies The first Roman laws written down were carved into twelve stone tablets although they would be considered harsh by today's standards. They are as follows females shall remain in guardianship even when they have…
