As I continue To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, new characters was introduced and the story gets more interesting. As chapter ten begins, Scout feels slightly ashamed of her father, because it seems like he doesn’t do anything remarkable. Atticus warns Scout and Jem that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” One day, a mad dog appears, wandering around the neighborhood; Heck Tate gives Atticus a rifle and tells him to shoot the dog. To Jem and Scout’s amazement, Atticus hit the dog in one shot, Miss. Maudie tells them that Atticus as a young man

Dill symbolizes a child perspective, childhood and summer, when they found out that he wouldn’t be coming in the summer leads Jem to realize the problems in Maycomb, therefore he starts to mature. The mockingbird represents innocence, it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they do not do one thing but make music for people to enjoy. Mad dog is a symbol of racism in the town of Maycomb, when it wanders on the streets of the neighborhood, all the people of Maycomb hide away in their houses, this shows they way the people of Maycomb are ignorant of their racist and prejudice ways. Atticus is the only one that makes a stand to racism, and it was represents by the fact that he was the one who shoots the dog and kills it. Tom Robinson symbolizes mockingbird and innocence, what they are accusing him of and the punishment that could follow is morally wrong, which is considered a sin; a sin to kill a mockingbird. An irony which was introduced in these chapters were the fact that Scout believes Atticus is the bravest man because he talks to Mrs. Dubose politely, and thinks he is very courageous for doing that. However, Atticus believes that Mrs. Dubose is the bravest person because she had the courage to fight and overcome her morphine

by Harper Lee, Atticus showed in multiple places how he was a leader and also how he could have been a "nigger lover". For a small town like Maycomb, there wasn't a lot of neighborly friendship going on; between Boo Radley, and the mysterious minds of Scout and Jem, the town was in circles. The mad dog in the story was a symbol of many different things, it was a symbol of the town and how at times the town could be against each other at all odds. From the incident with the mad dog, Scout and Jem Finch learn that their father can be a man of action and not just a old man as they think he is, that he is a balanced and fair man, and that they should appreciate their father because they learn of his hidden talents and principles.…

A child learns so much from interacting with its surroundings. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jeremy Finch does a whole lot of learning. Jem and Scout witness some of the evils of man and learn important lessons from them. However, Jem understands most of the events going on around him than his younger sibling Scout. From roughly the age of 10 through 13 we see how much Jeremy (Jem) Finch has evolved from the point-of-view of his little sister, Jean-Louise (Scout) Finch, which gives an exceptional perspective on his growth.…

In the novel ‘To Kill A mockingbird’ by Harper Lee there were many themes, the theme I thought was worth learning about was courage. The ideas to learn about courage were that there are two types of courage, physical and moral, and that Lee and I both clearly agree that moral courage is more important than physical courage. Through the actions of Atticus and Mrs Dubose, Lee shows us that this idea is worth learning about.…

Even though Atticus is just seen as a lawyer in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", Jem and Scout, his kids, come to realize what kind of a great father he is. Many people think a gun is used to kill innocent people or animals. Atticus shot this mad dog because if he had not, the dog would have been danger towards others. Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem "forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time" (Lee 98). This demonstrates that Scout and Jem come to understand and value Atticus when they see him come and kill the dog. Before this innocent happened they thought that Atticus was just a man who solved cases, but they never knew about the other side of their father. Atticus in this story is a lawyer who defends a black male named Tom Robinson. One of Atticus’s reason to defend Tom Robinson was that if he didn’t then he couldn’t be able to hold up his head in town and couldn’t represent this county in the legislature. He also couldn’t even tell Scout or Jem not to do something again. Jem and Scout come to admire Atticus when they figure out that Atticus is standing up for what he believes in even though most of the whole county doesn’t. Finally Atticus speaks to Jem about courage. He tries to develop that relationship with Jem by making him see things the way he does. For instance he talks about Mrs. Dubose to Jem and says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (112). This proves that Jem comes to admire Atticus through his speech because Atticus is using another person as an example then himself. He is using Mrs. Dubose as an example and tried to make him understand that she died beholden to nothing and no one. The reason Atticus explained it this way was because, he wanted Jem to understand…

It’s a sin to kill mockingbirds. That’s what Atticus told Jem when he acquired his first weapon. He told him it’s a sin to harm anything that doesn’t commit any wrong, a message the American South needed to hear desperately at the time Harper Lee was writing. In the book, the children have been relentlessly making fun of Boo Radley, but Jem soon realizes that Boo is not what their prejudices had caused them to make him out to be. He learns from this, and begins questioning his beliefs. Lee uses Jem’s experiences with prejudice to introduce the message into the story, which is a message that is also meant to influence the racist American south.…

“The witness of the state… have presented themselves to you… in cynical confidence that their testimonies won’t be doubted [because of]... the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings.” (Lee 273). This was a line quoted from Atticus during Tom Robinson's court case in To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the early 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama, when many people were strongly prejudiced against blacks. Atticus said this line not only to save Tom Robinson, a black man, from the wrongful verdict of rape, but potentially even some of his town from the stifling grip of prejudice. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrated that prejudice causes lack of empathy and bias; this was shown through the words and reactions to conflicts of prejudiced characters.…

Racism has been an issue for many, many decades in our society and has been addressed by numerous literary publications including the award-winning novel ‘To kill a Mockingbird’. Many of the ideologies of the time, in which the novel was written, the 1960’s, are embedded in the story. Some of these ideologies, challenged by the author, seem alive and well today, over 50 years later. The reason that I am writing this article is to indicate the relevance of ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ by linking the racism in the story with a recent event.…

The song “Mockingbird” by Eminem reveals many concepts throughout the song. Many emotions were shown through his lyrics for the love he has for his two daughters. His lyrics provide a brief and straight forward message but if you take time out to interpret each line it consumes a story of his life. The word alone proved an important message about how he feels about himself as a father and describes the problems he faced trying to raise Hailie and Laney. The music adds emotion to the lyrics but just reading the lyrics alone is enough to understand the struggles Eminem went through.…
