A Character Study

Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson is a 25 year old black man that lives on the outskirts of Maycomb , Alabama with his wife and children. He was a member at his church which informs that he was religious and respects god. He always was polite and always thought of doing things for others out of passion and kindness. Tom is physically handicapped , like a bird with a broken wing , but his race is probably bigger “disability “ in the Maycomb community. He recognized Mayella the woman that accused him raping her in great need at the time at personal expense.

Tom helped the woman “Mayella” because it seemed liked the husband or chillun did not help her out none , which is why he helped her at personal expense. The help that was given to Mayella turned out to be more of loss for Tom , because he knew that Mayella making a pass at him was going to be serious danger. Tom knew that helping with out pay was going to bring confusion in the end but passion to another human being from another human is definitely a better factor. Tom's life ends when a Caucasian woman “ Mayella “ decides to accuse him of raping her which is known that it is a false statement. A mockingbird has been struck.

Tom's life is having the beginning of the end. The trail begins and he is accused of not only raping her but abusing in other physical ways. People were informed that Mayella asked Tom to do some work for her while her father was out , and Tom came in to her house and forcibly beat and raped her until her father appeared back and scared him away. The truthful side was that Mayella invited him inside , threw her arms around him and started to kiss him , Tom tried to push her away that is when her father “ Bob Ewell” arrived and begin to beat her while Tom ran away in fright.

Further informed Mayella's bruises were on the right side that being said she most likely had to be hit with the left hand. Tom's left hand is out of the question because the muscles in the left arm were torn when he was twelve which leads to the fact that Bob Ewell “Father” of Mayella leads with his left hand. The evidence gives an reasonable doubt that Tom should be set free , but after time passing by of deliberation jury informs that Tom is pronounced guilty. The decision would have been sooner because a black man's word is not trusted , but this case was clearly should have been in Tom's favor. This a perfect an example of a mockingbird because it shows that innocence is destroyed by evil.

Tom Robinson Obituary

Tom Robinson ( Born May 29 , 1901 , Maycomb , Alabama) Tom citizen of Maycomb died August 6, 1935. He tried escaping from prison and got shot 17 times. He was accused and convicted of a horrible crime. Many believed his innocence but in the end, the truth did not prevail. Mr. Robinson after being sent to prison, decided that he could not live in such a place and wanted his freedom. When he tried to escape that is when he was shot down and died. He was a proud man. He left Maycomb on his terms, in a sense taking his own life by trying to escape. He was a hard working man , he provided for his family and looked out for others around him. Tom often helped people without charge just to be neighborly. Sadly, this in the end is what made him a target for others. Him helping out that way for others unfortunately made him a target in the end. It is unfortunate that everyone did not get to see how great of a man Tom was to be , they got to see the quality of Tom by his skin. Tom will be remembered as a good, honorable man. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife and small children. He will be missed by his friends and his fellow workers on the farm. Tom will be missed by many. Hopefully, the people of Maycomb will learn a lesson from his death. He is survived by his wife Helen Robinson and his children. Tom was a great man he always gave a hand when needed. Atticus Finch was a very close friend to him and his lawyer. He had great respect for everyone and was still hated , he was a true life of a mockingbird.

Monologue

Monologue – Helen Robinson

Helen Robinson : (Praying)Dear our Father, please watch over my husband yonder at the courthouse. Let the justice enlighten the juries. May the God’s will be present with Mr. Finch, and with my dear husband, Tom Robinson… Amen. A white word against a colored word is a challenge to prove wrong. Everyone expects him to be guilty , which depresses me because Tom and I grew up in this town and to come and to come and think that it comes down to color and not how you treat others. My husband had one arm that word well and he still went out and worked for his family.

I just want thank Atticus for defending Tom ! I thought Atticus would have a chance at proving Tom innocent because the evidence clearly shows that he did not do a such thing what so ever. ( Praying) Lord please watch over my husband and Atticus I love them so dearly , please them come home safely! Tom must be scared because the court room almost jumped on him , you can just see hurt in his eyes when he saw how many people decided to want him gone. The jury decided to go with what is wrong and convict Tom of rape , my poor baby he was so innocent and all they can do is just go with the lies. My Tom , I loved you with all my heart, you were the love of my life , the outstanding father to my kids , and a incredible husband. I can not believe evil has struck again may God be with you my love! You are still survived through your family , you will always live us. I still had hope because I knew that there just had to be another chance just had to be. Soon as my hope got bigger you got shot 17 times for escaping jail for wanting to have freedom from all you was going through , well now you are free baby may God be with you.

In Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, one of the most prominent themes used in the novel is the action of intolerance and the affect it has on all people. The theme of intolerance is fully explored in the case of Tom Robinson and the underlying racism shown in the treatment of him. Intolerance is met by all three main characters, Scout, Atticus and Jem but is experience by many of the other supporting characters. There was no one kind of intolerant person; they all came from different background, which is testimony to the point of the book ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of views.’ This quote shows that you have no idea why a person does what they do until you experience things from their point of view. This idea is why the trial happened, and explains why Tom was accused of raping Mayella.…
