Introduction

I’ve heard/listened to report of mobile phones causing brain tumours, on television, the radio, and on reports on the internet. So I have chosen to do this question because I want to know if the theory is true or not. I’m going to search on the internet arguments and studies that suggest that mobile phones can give you tumours or cancer, and then I’m going to be looking at studies that says it doesn’t. After I’ve collected my information I’m going to compare and evaluate them, and then come to my own conclusion.

Evidence for

There are three main reasons why people are concerned that wireless or mobile phones can have the potential to cause cancer or tumours.

[1] One reason is because wireless or mobile phones emit radio frequent energy, and tissues nearest to where the phone is held can absorb this energy.
More people now have mobile or wireless phones, the rate of mobiles bought in the United States in 2010, was 303 million. Globally, the number of cell phone subscriptions is estimated by the International Telecommunications Union to be 5 million.
The amount of phone calls per day has increased rapidly over the past few years; cell phone technology has also undergone substantial changes.
[1] ‘Radiofrequency energy is a form of electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation can be categorized into two types: ionizing (e.g., x-rays, radon, and cosmic rays) and non-ionizing (e.g., radiofrequency and extremely low-frequency or power frequency)’
[2] ‘Cell phone users beware! A new report by 31 scientists meeting at the World Health Organization has found that using a mobile phone may increase risk for certain kinds of brain cancers.’
[3] ‘Two families who lost loved ones who used mobile phones extensively over a long period of

This article talks about how cell phones are not linked to cancer. According to Danish researchers, the biggest study ever consisting of 350,000 people found no evidence of any link. This concluded that people who have used a cell phone for a decade don’t have different cancer rates than those who have not. Last year, a different study found no connection between cell phones and cancer. But it showed a possible connection between heavy phone usage and glioma, a brain tumor that is rare but deadly. However, this information was not enough to support the case. That study of over 14,000 people in many countries, along with animal experiments, led to classifying electromagnetic energy from cell phones as possibly carcinogenic along with coffee and gasoline engine exhaust. But cell phones don’t issue the same radiation that is used in medical tests or found in radon soil so there might not be a risk. The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications Commission have no evidence of cell phones being linked to cancer but people still have fears of getting it, although cancer rates have not risen since cell phones were introduced. Researchers have updated a recent study examining 358,403 cell phones users 30 years of age and older in Denmark from 1990 to 2007. They found that cell phone users did not have a higher risk of cancer than those without them. Cell phone users also aren’t more likely to develop a tumor in a part of the brain where phones are held against the head. About three-quarters of the world’s population use a cell phone. This makes it difficult for scientists to compare cancer rates between users and non-users. The advocacy group MobileWise said that the Danish study wasn’t enough to consider the long-term risk since brain tumors can take decades to develop. In about 30 other studies, those with brain tumors…

According to source 4, “Radiation from cell phone is brain tumor activity low b radiation from cell phone cause cancer with different types of tumors.” This means that scientists are trying to seek labs and figure out if the myths are true in the meantime try keeping your phone being 5/8 inches away from your face to avoid brain tumors. Another quote from source 5, “The epidemiologists explains that their is a discovery that cell phones protect against cancer and suspect that they may cause cancer.” This is because they believe the first has no mechanism and the second may have unknown one. In conclusion, in articles there are stories that people might have brain tumors because of talking on their phones. However, it's not a scientific…

There is evidence that suggests that RF energy can cause malignant tumors by affecting the glial cells because of the close contact between the cellphone and the cranial area. As well RF can cause meningiomas through the damage in the meninges; the membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. A study was performed found that the use of mobile phones caused an increase in the risk of malignant brain tumors.1 Another study done by the University Hospital in Sweden found a strong causal relationship between cell phone use and increased risk in malignant brain tumors as well as neck tumors.2 When the risk of glioma in mobile phone users was tested an experiment tried to focus on the part of the brain that was exposed to RF fields the most, which was between the mouth and the ear. The study found that the proportion of gliomas in mobile users was 28% versus non users which was 14%. Therefore there is a higher risk of brain tumors for frequent cell phone users.3…

The worst effect of mobile phones is its radiation can cause cancer. Many people don’t realize that mobile phones have high radiation. If you want to prove it, put your mobile phones close to the TV, computer, or radio and there will be a feedback of the sound of its radiation. As so if we put it in pocket of our shirt, mobile phones’ radiation causes cancer, especially breast cancer. And for your info, not only women but also…

According to the article “Dangers of today technology” Recent research shows that cellular phones can cause health complication, including cancer. “Heavy long exposure to cell phone radiation increases risks for certain type of cancer, including Leukemia, and males impairs sperm production. Parental exposure to cell phone radiation has been shown to produce blood-brain barrier leakage and brain, liver and eye damage. The microwave radiation that heats food also creates free radical that can become carcinogenic, while the consumption of microwaved food is associated with short term decrease in white blood cells. The food and drug administration yet to recognize studies that indicates microwave oven alter foods, nutritional structure and as with the danger of cell phone use, most studies indication minimal or no health risk are, infarct, industry-sponsored”.(P-39-40)…

This article is about if cell phones can cause brain cancer and slows brain metabolism. The scientists had volunteers to test out there theories. The volunteers held a flip phone to their ear for 50 minutes with a signal and then held the phone to their ear for 50 minutes without signal. "metabolism in the region closest to the antenna was significantly higher [about 7 percent] for on than off conditions." (nora Volcow) That region includes the orbitofrontal cortex and temporal pole, which are responsible for decision making and auditory processing. The 7 percent increase might actually be on the low end of the spectrum of what people experience after a lengthy phone conversation. these results provide evidence that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of radiofrequency from acute cell phone exposure, the long-term consequences of this slight shift if there are any remain unclear. Some researchers and concerned individuals still doubt that cell signals are in the clear health-wise, but radiation frequencies, such as UV and x-rays, that are linked to cancer put out much stronger signals than cell phones do.…

    The Danger of Cell Phones

Cell phones have a mythological back ground for causing cancer. A few Electro-Sensitives think that cell phone EMR actually caused their cancer. However, it is highly unrealistic that the things the electro-sensitives are scared of really promote cancer (Electro-Sensitives 1). Furthermore, these thoughts are assumptions and there is no scientific evidence to prove these accusations. Cancer is accepted to be caused by damage to DNA making the cell reproduce the wrong type of cell for that area of the body. This is what we call a tumor. If this tumor begins to spread to other areas of the body it’s diagnosed as cancerous. Many studies have been performed to try to prove that cell phone electromagnetic radiation, in the form of radiofrequency, can indeed damage DNA. In the document “Cell Phones and Cancer Risk,” from the National Cancer Institute, it states that: “The results of these studies have generally not provided clear evidence of a relationship between cell phone use and cancer” (2). Of course studies will continue to be taken and I encourage these studies. However, right now there is no evidence to prove otherwise. In the paper “Electro-Sensitives & Electrohypersensitivity” from The Skeptic’s Dictionary, it gives proof to why cell phones are seen as not able to cause cancer:…

Today’s technologies are advancing at such an astonishing rate. This can make it difficult for even the most avid “techie” to keep pace. Technology is that wonderful thing that brings comfort and convenience to our lives. But, with that comfort and convenience, there often comes a price; and the technology of the cell phone proves no exception. Arguably, as a communication tool, the cell phone has no equal in how it has changed and affected our lives. Mostly, the effect has been positive in many ways. But, as it is with anything, overuse and abuse has brought out its dark side and the effect of unintended consequences. One of the unintended consequences of the cell phone is its effect on the health of its users and even the health of those around them. What is the effect of the cell phone on our health? Researchers are examining the health risks associated with cell phone use. This research has focused on traffic accidents, germs, cancer, electromagnetic radiation, and vision health.…
