Mitch Albom
On May 23, 1958, I was born in Passaic, New Jersey. And now, I am a 55 year old American best-selling author, journalist, screenwriter, dramatist, radio, television broadcaster and also a musician. I am Mitchell David Albom, which is also known as Mitch Albom. I lived in Buffalo when I was small but then I settled down in Oaklyn, New Jersey, which is close to Philadelphia. I grew up in a small, middle-class neighbourhood from which most people never left the neighbourhood. I am glad that I have such supportive parents which they used to say “Don’t expect your life to finish here. There’s a big world out there. Go out and see it.” So I attended high school in Southern New Jersey and then I moved to Waltham, Massachusetts to continue my studies in Brandeis University for bachelors in sociology. I spent a few years working in night clubs to pursuit my dream of becoming a musician. I’ve joined various bands in high school and college. I also got enrolled in Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where I studied Jazz Piano from Charlie Banacos. Surprisingly, while I was working in music industry in New York, I developed interest in journalism. I started writing for Queens Tribune, a weekly newspaper to pursuit my new interest. This experience helped me earn an entry in Columbia University for master’s degree in journalism. At that time, I worked with a sports magazine as a part timer in addition to night time piano playing to earn my tuition fees. This eventually kindled my interest in sports writing and I carried on after graduation by freelancing for sports publications. I had my first break though in 1983, when I was hired as feature writer by The Fort Lauderdale News Sun Sentinel, and later I got promoted to columnist. I’ve won the Associated Press Sports Editors award in 1985 for best Sports News Story, and soon I was hired as lead sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press to replace Mike Downey, a popular columnist who had taken a job with the Los

Mitch Snyder (1943-1990) is known mostly for his work advocating for the rights of homeless people and specifically as a leader of the Community For Creative Non-Violence (CCNV). CCNV began in the early 1970s as an anti-war group and evolved into an organization that provides food, clothing, shelter, and educational programs for the poor and homeless. Towards his goal of improving the lives of homeless people, Snyder employed non-violent confrontational protest tactics aimed at shocking the public and drawing media attention to this cause. These protest tactics included building occupation, construction of a tent city in Lafayette Park, vandalism, and hunger strikes.…

At the funeral at I looked around in the Early morning mist and saw all the people I had grown close to, bonds that could never be broken. So many parts of my life are affected because of the relationships formed in the big house next to the pond. I rewatch old lectures on CDs and text congratulations to my best friend from A. S. A. P. when he received the soccer scholarship he had always dreamed of. This summer I even met up with a band named So Percussion for a food drive at Princeton University, where some of them are professors. Jobs they wouldn’t have gotten without the help of Oscar Winner David Lang, who they met at A. S. A. P. I have had long talks with a leader of Black Lives Matters whose parents were a part of the Black Panthers. My father's best friend is now Paul Greengard, a Nobel Prize winner on the way to curing Alzheimer's. It is impossible to not appreciate the memories I continue to create with, continually sustaining the relationships Kippy initiated. I am so proud to have been a part of something as special as Kippy’s…

    Bob Hope Band Scholarship

From his first steps on the vaudeville stage, to his last USO show, Bob Hope was entertaining. Mr. Hope was a comedian and an actor, yet he still reached an unmatchable caliber of musical ability. While his talents were far greater than mine, I still feel that there are many similarities between us. His love of music inspired me to appreciate its role in my life even more. Since I began playing the saxophone in seventh grade, music has been one of the centers of my life. I compete, perform and most importantly, practice on a consistent basis. The band program at my high school is poorly funded, and thus offers few opportunities in the way of musical challenges. However, because of my love of music and feeling of obligation to my classmates, I continue to be an active member and hold the position of drum major. To further challenge myself, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Louisville Youth Orchestra saxophone ensemble. This ensemble challenges my abilities and requires me to often seek help from my private instructor. While my performances with this ensemble may not be perfect, due to the level of difficulty of the music, I…

My life sounds like a lot of things, the sound of my kitten making strange noises because she doesn’t meow, the sound of my brothers chasing each other up the stairs, and the sound of my entire family having dinner at my house for a special occasion. But, those aren’t the only sounds. I have grown up in a household where music has always existed. In every car ride there was always music. That's what I remember most about my childhood, is the music that we listened too. There were memories that had nothing to do with them of course, but there are many small memories that are centered around a certain song that we'd all dance and sing to. The song itself isn't what's special, it's the memories that go along with it.…

I have performed in New York City, the Georgia Dome, Disney World, and Lucas Oil Stadium. I’ve been given the opportunity to work with distinguished individuals from around the country and invited to participate in select ensembles. But it has given me so much more than musical experiences. The discipline required to be a musician has weaved its way into many aspects of my academic life as well, creating a more focused and driven person who has continued to succeed in the rigorous academics I’ve been challenged with. I have also developed a creative mindset, that at times, seems uncontrollable. Whether it be creating videos, finding ways to incorporate engineering into an English project, or writing my next original percussion ensemble piece, it seems the applications for my creativity have become…
