There is a reason horror films are rated R. While people may want to see the terror, killing, crime, violence and blood, there is a sense of revulsion underlying it. It is even more so when movies are based on true stories. While the movie itself is entertaining, somewhere deep inside there is a sense of wrongness. The movie “The Killing Fields” is one of these. Directed by Roland Joffe, a London born producer, the movie is compelling, drawing the viewers into the story and into the lives of the characters, but the story is almost revolting: the Khmer Rouge killed over one million Cambodian people and forced many more than that into slave labor, complete with very little to eat and forced re-education.…

Andrew’s life is fractured into many pieces. His family is plagued with deep-seated hostility and trauma that developed long before his birth. From the abuse his father endured as a child and then transferred to his own children, the family decay after the Vietnam War, and the displacement of his family to America, Andrew has no sense of identity. Andrew is troubled with the duality of being Vietnamese and American and feels if he returns to Vietnam he will find meaning for his life. He does not assimilate to either culture and his anxiety grows as he tries to find a place to belong. Pham reminisces on his childhood, and includes deep memories of his other family members as well. The fissure in his family stems from the physical abuse and inability for the entire family to merge the two cultures and adapt together. The damage from the violence moves like a virus through the family, branching off and taking victim after victim. Chi-Minh, Andrew’s transsexual brother, cannot rise above the hardship and kills himself. Through out the book, Andrew goes back and forth giving the reader insight into Chi-Minh conflicts. In the short story “Ashes For the Wind” by Hernando Tellez, the author uses conflicts to develop the theme that sometimes we have to sacrifice our life to fight corruption. Juan, the protagonist, is a tenant who lives a peaceful life in the village with his wife Carmen and a new born baby. He involves in an external conflict when the corrupt government orders his family to move out of their own place. At the beginning of the story, Arevalo visits Juan’s farm house and tells him “it would be best for you to clear out”. He then recalls his unpleasant encounter of the same man and a policeman in town; they treat him unfairly. With the policeman carrying whip, and others refusing to sell him oil, Juan senses he is in a bad situation. Moreover, Juan’s external conflict causes his internal conflict since he now faces the dilemma of whether they should move out of their own home. He struggles to find an answer because either way they have to sacrifice something. On one hand he doesn’t want to give up his own place and let the authority wins; On the other hand he jeopardizes his family’s life if they don’t move out. A second intimidating visit soon comes. A Police man fires at his place and Arevalo just stands there “with hanging head”. In the end Juan chooses to stay in the farm with his wife and son, so they all die in a set up fire. Both external and intenal conflicts are resolved here when the authority appears to win but in fact the author sends out a message that people should not be intimidated and should stand up to corruption like Juan and his family…

Throughout the background of The Burning Monk image, the consequences and results of his protest are apparent. Many of the bystanders are holding hands over their mouths and have expressions of shock; one of the consequences of his sacrifice is the jarring and agitational response it invokes in people. Secondly, another consequence can be observed through Browne’s image by viewing the type of people his self-immolation took place in front of. Many of the people in the background are monks who are supporting him and his cause; as a result of his sacrifice he inspired the movement and other people to continue his mission. The far-reaching consequences of his protest can be seen by the international response; “No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one” (John F. Kennedy). The monks protest did not die down and fade, but rather spread to a global audience and global awareness of his cause. Thích Quảng Đức’s self-immolation had far reaching and inspiring consequences that can be observed through The Burning Monk image itself, and the international response to…
