Security procedures and risk assessments should be undertaken to minimize the risks of children going missing. On school trips there should be the correct staff to children ratio to safely supervise the children. Regular head checks should be undertaken.

As soon it is noticed that a child is missing, the class teacher should be informed and a thorough check of the building and outside areas undertaken to ensure the child is not hiding. If the child is hiding, parents should be informed and if this becomes a regular occurrence, a risk assessment for the child would need to be written, and shared with all staff working with that child. It may be necessary to fit locks on the doors, especially, if the doors open out to the road. Locks should be out of reach of the children.

External gates and doors should be checked to see if there has been a breach of security, and the child has left the premises.

A register should be taken to make sure no other children are missing.

If the child can’t be found, the head teacher, the child’s parents and the police must be informed.

Staff should be questioned, to ascertain the child’s last movements.

Other children, if aware a child is missing, can become frightened so it is important to keep the children calm and answer questions sensitively. Events should not be discussed in front of them.

Security incident

Serious security incidents such as a bomb attack or a plane crashing into the school are dealt with by following emergency procedures set out by County Hall. Copies of these are filed in the school safe. If the plan needed to be implemented, the head Teacher, Deputy Head and Senior Leadership team would instruct staff as necessary.
