John is a 46-year-old male who attended with his wife for assessment. He has good comprehension of speech but is limited in saying words. His sentences are also short and limited. He had a mild pharyngeal dysphagia; he is taking prepared, mildly thickened drinks to prevent aspiration pneumonia, which he had in hospital. He has had speech therapy and will continue as an outpatient clinic where you work.
John wants to return to work part time once he is better. He has a computer at home for practice and he will need an AAC device with basic information about himself, in case he becomes stuck for words.
1. What do you think the speech pathologist would like to know about this client?
The health professional might need to know client’s issues, pre-existing abilities and/or progress, client’s goals and current health status. Other information also can be: why the client wants and/or needs therapy, when the presenting issues first became noticeable, what happens when the client tries to communicate or swallow, if therapeutic services have been provided in the past and whether past treatment has been successful and client’s has special needs. Know about clients’ availability to attend for therapy about client behavior or issues regarding it that can affect the client ability to participate in therapy programs.
