In Brave New world, a novel written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley, the citizens were conditioned to a drug called soma, which keeps them happy. Soma not only made the citizens happy, calm, or sedated, but also kept them from actually thinking or realizing that they were basically enslaved in the World State because the controllers had control of them. The people who took Soma took advantage of the drug. Another thing the citizens were conditioned to was religion. In the novel Mustapha Mond, one of the ten World Controllers said that soma is "Christianity without the tears." This saying means that Christianity functions in the same way of soma. It offers comfort for an individual, but also for control of society. Its natural to believe in God when your alone, but in the novel, Brave New World, they are never alone, if they were alone it would conclude thinking and their existence in the world. In my personal life I am conditioned to religion. I’m a Christian, but sometimes I do not always fulfill the Christian duties. In my younger life I grew up in a Christian home believing in God. When I was younger I did not have as much control in my life as I do now, so on Sundays my parents would wake me up early in the morning and make me go to church. Now that I am older, instead of going to church I am home doing homework, watching Sunday sports, or shopping. It’s not really a sin to miss church on Sunday, but you have to show respect to God. I may not do everything that a Christian should do, but I am always asking god to help me through something, or to help me. Sometimes you have to do what your suppose to receive, and I am not always doing that. In our society we are conditioned to TV, and in TV there’s reality shows and media. We watch episodes that we enjoy, but in those episodes there’s commercials. In the commercials they try to adversities get you to buy things that normally attract the kind of audience of the show. For an example, on channels like nickelodeon or Disney channel there are younger audiences so the commercials advertise things such as toys. Or on the cooking channel the commercials may be cooking supplies. In reality shows we see how people live, it could be a rich family or even a poor family. Reality shows that are based on rich people the audience may want to live that way, or even dress like them. Together we are conditioned to believe what we see on TV and they way we want to live our lives. With commercials we buy things based on the way they are advertise, as in beautiful women or extremely happy children to get you purchase the item.
