Communication Technology

In this assignment I will give a definition of communication technology, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of communication technology and the impact that communication technology has on our public and private life. I will also explore the current developments and also the legislation that governs this area. After exploring these areas I will draw conclusions based on my findings. Communication technology is way of communicating with people using electronic devices like: mobile phones, laptops, fax. Communication technology can be beneficial to us all making communication with others faster and easier thanks to technology like email, phones and beepers. Today, it’s much easier to communicate with others than it was just a decade ago. We can send and receive messages instantly with a number of new technologies. This has improved our lives in many ways by allowing us to become more interconnected and knowledgeable about the world. We all use communication technology in our every day lives at home, at work or on holidays. Two decades ago, the only way for people to communicate with each other was meeting face to face or writing letters. However, people living or working in different countries might be unable to meet each other. Sending a letter might take them four or five days to receive. In the way of being delivered, many letters were lost or misplaced. Moreover, it cost lots of money for sending letters if people lived too far from others. Some disadvantages of communication technology include:
Unemployment - While information technology may have streamlined the business process it has also created job redundancies and downsizing. This means that a lot of lower and middle level jobs have been done away with causing more people to become unemployed. The Internet has become a very good tool for hackers, robbers and cyber scam group. Because of this they can get access to important information
Privacy - Though communication technology may have made communication quicker, easier and more convenient, it has also bought along privacy issues.
From mobile phone signal interceptions to email hacking, people are now worried about their own private information becoming public knowledge.
Lack of job security - Industry experts believe that the internet has made job security a big issue as since technology keeps on changing with each day. This means that one has to be in a constant learning mode, if he or she wishes for their job to be secure. While information technology may have made the world a global village, it has also contributed to one culture dominating another weaker one. For example it is now argued that US influences how most young teenagers all over the world now act, dress and behave. Languages too have become overshadowed, with English becoming the primary mode of communication for business and everything else. Nowadays, we are happy with the advance of new technologies such as email, mobile phones and laptops. New things on the market appear on a daily basis like: smartphones with many Apps, smart TVs with access to internet, 4K TVs. People can talk with each other through mobile phones, chat through the Internet and leave a message through e-mail or beeper if someone is not at home. Technology has indeed created an effective way for people to keep in touch with one another. In addition to this, new technologies like television and the Internet helps us get information quicker and easier. If an earthquake occurs in Japan, Irish people will hear about this news only few hours later. Moreover, people can read books or download music songs, movies, games, software, and pictures throughout the network. It is quite easy and cheap as some Internet web-sites are free for accessing. All this new technology has brought along a lot of legislation worldwide. Data Protection and Privacy Law in Ireland is a piece of legislation that regulates the use of new technology. It is against the law to send any offensive, indecent, obscene or threatening messages well as phoning someone persistently without reasonable cause. The same applies for bullying on Facebook, Twitter or other social media. There are laws that give you the right to know and have access to any information about yourself that is kept on the internet. Websites are obliged to tell you when they are using cookies and these can be accepted only if you want to. In this assignment I have talked about the importance of modern technology and communication technology and the positive and negative way they changed our lives. I learned a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of communication technology, I looked at the current developments in communication technology such as smartphones, smart TVs and the introduction of Wi-fi in many places like: airports, shopping centers. In conclusion, thanks to technology, people from all corners of the world are able to communicate with each other quickly and easily. It has changed our life for the better. In the coming year, we may hope to see an even greater number of new technologies are invented.

We have been talking about Ethnography, which very simply put, creates a narrative based on field research about a particular group or culture. As practice for your own group Ethnography projects, you will write a short personal narrative, which uses digital technology, narrative elements and rhetorical appeals to tell your story. You are expected to create a map of a city of your choice and tell your story, your personal narrative, in Google Maps. Your composition must have at least five locations points. Each of the points should have a short “blurb” description. I strongly encourage you to think about how your experience connects to either a larger social issue or something you learned—about yourself, your surroundings, or the world. You are to use Google Maps as an aid to help you tell your story. Consider how readers will navigate through your locations and how Google Maps functions to help you tell your story.…

    | This law has been put in place to protect everyone in the setting, not only in childcare settings but in every work place. It is crucial that practitioners put this legislation into place as it makes everyone in the setting safe and it ensures everyone’s safety. The act makes sure that the maintenance of the work place and the people in it are protected against risks to health and safety arising out of or in connection with the activities of persons at work. ‘An Act to make further provision for securing the health, safety and welfare of persons at work, for protecting others against risks to health or safety’ http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1974/37.In most childcare settings toys/products bought by them must have the BSI kitemark sign or the CE mark, this ensures that the toys/products the children are using are safe to play with and meet the legal requirements that are needed for them to be allowed to be used ‘Many products such as toys must meet legal requirements before they can be sold within the European Union and must carry a CE mark. This shows that the product meets European rules.’(Tassoni.P pg.140). When I go to my placements for the first time they always ask to see my CRB this shows them that I am safe to work with and be around children. In child care settings it is your employer who has a duty of care to look after you and others, as far as possible, your health, safety and welfare while you are at work. They should start with a risk assessment to spot possible health and safety hazards. But this is a team effort and if a risk arises you must report it immediately. These are done to help keep children safe from any possible harm.…
