Misaskim Case Study
People often ask me how I can volunteer for Misaskim.
How do you clean up blood and body fluids at an accident scene?
How can you observe charred or decomposed bodies?
How do you notify young children about the sudden death of a parent?
How can you hear about tragedy after tragedy?
I’ll admit, it isn’t easy at all. However, the most difficult thing for me – as a Misaskim volunteer – is the cash crunch. During the scorching heat this summer, it was hard for me to tell a father who catastrophically just lost his son that we have no air conditioners left in the warehouse. It was difficult for me to arrange a speedy burial for a מת מצוה in accordance with her wishes due to the lack of funds. It was stressful when I had to deny a יתום entrance to a חול המועד event simply because he hasn’t registered on time and we ordered a limited amount of tickets.
Misaskim is not a distant organization that you once heard of. I am sure that you benefitted from Misaskim’s multi-faceted operations: Whether you enjoyed the air conditioner while

Hopefully, you have not – and should never – experienced Misaskim myriad acts of kindness that occurs when tragedy strikes. The ordeal of dealing with the Medical Examiner, notifying family members, and arranging all details of כבוד המת. You most definitely encountered a lonely individual who can’t afford a burial or was to be cremated, or a neglected and unkempt יתום who needs emotional and financial support. Who will be there for them if not Misaskim?
Misaskim is an organization that doesn’t back off from challenges and isn’t afraid when faced with hurdles. When someone is faced with a tragedy, we are there to coordinate every detail so that the personal crisis is as bearable as possible. We never say no and continuously accomplish the impossible.

. . in each case they come up to me and say ‘we are here to serve.’ They have this angelic look on their face and want to be of help, but the first thing they ask is ‘where can we eat, sleep . . .’ and I say, ‘you know we are in the middle of a major disaster, right?’ I mean, I wanted to appreciate their offer, but they only added to my problems. I needed people and supplies, not people to take care of, as I already had that.” (Fischer, Gregoire, Scala, Letukas, Mellon, Romine & Turner, 2006)…

The place that I decided to volunteer at was the St. Thomas Church Pantry. The purpose of this service is to get food to people who have fallen upon tough financial times. One business skill that this group needs to keep the food pantry running is marketing skills. One of the struggles that food pantries have is not getting enough food donations of items they need. So, the leader of the pantry must ask for donations of the items that they run low on. This also means that the volunteers at the Pantry must take inventory on food items to ensure that they will not run out of certain food items. Also, they have to have a volunteer schedule just like most businesses this is to ensure that at least two volunteers will be working during the two days of the week that the Pantry is…

I have had a very tough, not easy, no help life, and yet I’ am always the first one to lend a helping hand to someone else. I volunteer at my local church to clean up local areas, I volunteer at the nursing home entertaining and accompanying the elderly, I also do some volunteer work at a local animal shelter. When you come from a place where no one has really ever helped you achieve or even move forward you become one of two people. The person who is bitter and will never lend a helping hand, or the person who never wants someone to go through what they have been through in life. I’ am person number two. I have experienced a lot of tragedy, disappointment, and rough times in my life. For being so young it is difficult to take it all in, yet I still know how to help when help is needed. If only there was someone to have the same mentality as me, and help when I needed it. There should be more people out there willing to lend a…

Challenges, hurdles and struggles are part of the shared human experience. Still, it is how we overcome this adversity that we learn, grow and share—values I yearn to inculcate for life. If selected for Peace Corps service, I would eagerly anticipate the physical, emotional and intellectual trials. Physically, I am stronger than I have ever been. After losing nearly 50 pounds and volunteering at Heifer Farm, I have turned a new healthy focus into a lifestyle. I am confident in my body’s ability to thrive in extreme conditions. Still, I will ask for help, if…

Personally to me it seemed like they was a huge issue of pride from the managers and union workers that they didn’t need to learn from the Toyota counterparts. This was due to them believing that they were better, and didn’t need to learn from someone lesser then them. This was classic case of discrimination. The managers in the beginning believed the information that they could attain was finite if they learned anything at all. The management and union believed that what they would learn wouldn’t be valuable to GM in the future.…

Never move or alter the positioning of the body! Make close visual examinations of the body and the area immediately around it. Look between the arms and legs without moving them. Look at the arms, hands and fingers. Are there defense wounds? Is there anything under the nails that you can see at this time? If you can, try to determine the cause of death and the instrument or method used. Take careful notes of the external appearance of the body and the clothing or lack of clothing. Look at or for lividity, decomposition, direction of blood flow patterns, remember the law of gravity. Is the blood flow consistant with it? Make detailed notes.…

On the morning of October 21st, 2009, my family got a call from the Reno, Nevada Police Department saying Kristin, my sister, had been in a car accident and was immediately taken into the hospital. They did not give specific details as to what had happened; only that she was going to be okay, but a family member needed to get down there as soon as they could. My father got on the next flight he could and I was sent off to school for the day with thoughts racing through my head if my sister and best friend was going to be okay and more importantly, make it out alive.…

Remember those precious moments of sitting around and trying to comfort; hearing the soothing, slow, and experienced voices. It is time consuming to sit and hear such stories, but a smile spills acrossed your face as you listen to their never ending stories, sometimes it is the same story that you heard yesterday or an hour ago. Each time you attempt to talk your words are abruptly cut off and the story continues. Some are filled with wisdom others too delirious to take serious. With time, listening and helping them, a bond of friendship is made. The days seem to go by fast and your friendship becomes stronger as you spend each day serving these types of people, and sharing experience with them as well. In one day it all comes to an end, they are no longer there to be assisted. Life appears to be like that in the every average day at the Avalon Care center.…
