Mis Assingment 2
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) relies on information systems to operate 19 hospitals, a network of other care sites, and international and commercial ventures. Demand for additional servers and storage technology was growing by 20 per-cent each year. UPMC was setting up a separate server for every application, and its servers and other computers were running a number of different operating systems, including several versions of Unix and Windows. UPMC had to manage technologies from many different vendors, including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, and IBM. Assess the impact of this situation on business performance. What factors and management decisions must be considered when developing a solution to this problem?
UPMC must look at capacity planning and scalability. Capacity planning is the process of predicting when a computer hardware system becomes saturated. UPMC has not done this in the past but now must plan for the future. Scalability refers the ability of a computer, product, or system to expand to serve a large number of users without breaking down. This is very important for UPMC because of all of its users. UPMC should also make sure it understands the total cost of technology assets. Although I don’t think it would be a good idea to own and maintain own hardware, software, and other infrastructure components They must decide to either lease or buy them from an external technology service provider.
To reduce costs and simplify its IT infrastructure, UPMC could go to one vender and select it as its primary server and storage technology provider with the goal of reducing UPMC’s IT infrastructure spending . The vender could provide help in managing the people, process, and technology issues surrounding the overhaul of UPMC’s IT infrastructure. UPMC should understand the more severs it has the more risk it has so it should attempt to reduce the number of servers it has. UPMC could consolidate its storage

Let’s said I have been named COO in a midsize company preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). I quickly notice several personnel problems that require my immediate attention. Before I start talking about the scenarios, I would like to refer about employment doctrine at will. Employment at will is a legal term with a specific meaning. Employment at will means that a worker can be fired for any reason or no reason. The U.S. law gives this right to the employer, unless the reason is one that is covered under the law against discrimination (age, sex, race, national origin, etc.). Most employees are not union members, they are at will.…
