The Queen of All That Dies was highly recommended by a friend, so I read it. It was intriguing. Sure I had a love and hate relationship with the man of the book King Montes Lazuli, but no matter what he did I couldn’t hate him for too long. He was a very conflicted soul, who had a big heart…at least when it came to Serenity. Serenity is strong and the one woman who fought Montes with every breath she could. No matter how strong and hard she wanted to be, she couldn’t help but feel so much for the man. Serenity had a love and hate relationship with Montes, while Montes just had a love and lust feelings for her. They were a match made in hell, so she thought. But the when she started to really feel for Montes she learned that Montes was everything…

In A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, the character Nana who is Mariam’s mother has gone through some type of hardship in her past. Nana mentions “There is nothing out there for her. Nothing but rejection and heartache. I know, akhund sahib. I know’” (Hosseini 18). Nana repeats the phrase “I know”, which indicates that she has gone through something similar. Nana had grieved through physical, mental and emotional sufferings. Physical suffering is a sorrow feeling inside. Nana has experienced this many years ago with the birth of Mariam. In chapter two it states, “When the pain got bad, I’d bite on a pillow and scream into it until I was hoarse. And still no one came to wipe my face or give me a drink of water.” (11). Nana suffered…

sense Mayella is a “rebel”, but she is also a outcast. Mayella is a victim of abuse, and Harper Lee uses this character as a comparison to Scout. He compares a stubborn girl who is not afraid to fight with a young woman who tries to save herself during the Tom Robinson trial. Mayella Ewell can be chracterized as a “sexual predator” when she sends the children out for ice cream, and grabs Tom Robinson by the legs in attempt to kiss him. Lee doesn’t think that Mayella is a predator, but merely just a young, weak woman. Mayella is feeble enough to allow her father, who already has a abusive hold over her, to get away with the truth, and uphold his “reputation”.…

There has been a flood of folklore and popular myth on the subject of supernatural beings capable of sucking the life out of their victims. One can find a mention of these creatures throughout the centuries. From a Succubus in the Bible to the Vampires of today’s Twilight Sagas, the short story “Luella Miller” by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is no different. This story, unlike many other tails, did not just come out and say that the creature was present for sure; it more or less hinted to it possible existences. Also the hypnotic state that the victims were in brings the reader to believe that something unnatural is at hand. With a closer look through the eyes of our narrator, Lydia Anderson, we can clearly see that the cause and effect of helping the alleged Succubus is very harmful and could possiblly cause death. In the short “Luella Miller” the evidence of an active Succubus is supported throughout the writings; only by looking closer can we find the truth.…

Margaret Laurence was born Jean Margaret Wemyss on July 18, 1926 in the prairie town of Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada. Both of her parents passed away in her childhood, and Laurence was raised by her aunt and maternal grandfather. Laurence decided in childhood that she wanted to be a writer, and began writing stories in elementary school. Her professional writing career began in 1943 with a job at the town newspaper, and continued in 1944 when she entered the Honours English program at Winnipeg's United College. Laurence's fiction was thereafter concerned with Canadian subjects, but she maintained her interest in African literature and in 1968 published a critical analysis of Nigerian literature, (Long Drums and Cannons: Nigerian Dramatists and Novelists 1952-1966). Her first work with Canadian subject matter The Stone Angel was published in 1964, and was the first of Laurence's group of "Manawaka novels", so called because they each take place in the fictional prairie town of Manawaka, a community modelled after Laurence's hometown of Neepawa, Manitoba. Laurence received a great deal of critical and commercial acclaim in Canada, and in 1971 was honoured by being named a Companion to the Order of Canada. In the early 1970s, Laurence returned to Canada and settled in Lakefield, Ontario. During this time she continued to write and held positions as writer-in-residence at the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario, and Trent University. In 1974, Laurence completed her final novel, The Diviners, for which she received the Governor General's Award and the Molson Prize. She was also a founder of the Writers' Trust of Canada (is a charitable organization providing financial support to Canadian writers. Founded by Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence and David Young, and registered as a charitable organization on March 3, 1976, the Writers' Trust celebrates and rewards the talents and achievements of Canada's novels), a…
