Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: A Short Story
You only hear the echo when you’re in the middle! I watch as my family walks down the hill, ready to continue on the 3-mile drive. I yell for them to come back up to the top to see what I had just found. They all begrudgingly trekked back up the hill and came to see what I was rambling on about. About an hour ago, we were meandering about the arboretum, walking through the various gardens, when we decided to go on the 3-mile drive. We piled in the car and began the slow journey through the winding hills and vast fields of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. We stopped to explore an old cabin turned museum, 3 tiny houses that teach kids about plants, and a giant tree that had once been struck by lightning. We soon reached the grove of cherry trees, and we all got out of the car to go and explore. I followed the trail up to the top of the tallest point in the arboretum, and I sat down on the short memorial wall that rings the top of the hill. My little sister had followed me up to the top, and when she got there she immediately climbed on top of the wall, and began walking on it. I got up and and walked around to the opening in the wall that allows you to get inside of it. The circle area created by the wall was all green grass, except for a small divot in the center that was dirt. I stepped on to it and I immediately heard a dead …show more content…
I had my little sister stand in the center and talk. Her face lit up when she heard the cool effect this place had on her voice. But, I couldn’t hear it. I figured that the way your voice is hitting off of the circular wall, then coming back to you ears only happens when you are in the center. Each of my family members tried the echo spot and are fascinated with it. Soon, we all head back down the hill, and continue on with the 3-mile drive all content with the discovery of something

After half an hour, we arrived at the graveyard. The graveyard was deserted and had hundreds of graves spaced out all over the field. The faint wind moaned through the trees and the grass danced. There was a high-pitched howl every so often. I feared that it might have been the dead spirits that came to complain about being disturbed. But I knew that ghosts weren’t real until…

My significant event is about my sixth grade trip to the Woodlands. It was right before the school day started, and the sky was blue and clear. After everyone was accounted for, it was a brief bus ride up the road to the Woodlands. Although I was nervous about going, that all went away because it was a beautiful day to bask in the woods, and socialize. The first day we were there, we were initiated, and we had to create woodsey nicknames for ourselves. We all hung out together outside the Mess Hall and enjoyed the sun.…

It was around nine a.m. on a crisp spring morning when I decided to go on a hike. I drove over to our public hiking trail and parked by the “Ruby hiking trail’ entrance. I got out of my car and grabbed my backpack that had my water bottle, salad, sweatshirt, and blanket in it. As I was walking down the trail, I heard birds singing, trees creaking, deer running, rabbits hopping, and a light breeze. About an hour into the hike, I started to get hungry. However, it was only about ten a.m. and I was hungry for lunch. I kept hiking down the trail so I could find a place to lay out my blanket. As I was walking I saw a sign that said “12 miles”, that meant that I had already walked twelve miles in one hour. After passing the sign, there was an open…

It was about that time to head over to the asylum. I was skeptical as to if this whole situation was real. I jumped into my car and drove down the long windy roads, until i came upon two humongous gates. On the gate was a crest of a needle injecting into a skull. This lead me to believe some pretty messed up surgeries or experiments went on in this sadistic place. The gates opened as I drove closer. The screeching shook my car. It seemed as if these gates hadn’t been opened in about one hundred years. The asylum was falling in on itself. This place had seen some things, unmentionable things. I parked my car and took a closer look at the asylum. I noticed that the sage was not here yet. So I wasn’t going to wait long, but i was going to give him a chance. Ten minutes go by and it seems that he is a no show. I decided to go ahead and head into the hellish building. I walked up to the door. I grabbed the handle. As soon as i touched the handle I was brought to the past. The sounds of crackling and the din of falling bodies and doors, the whistle and hiss of the flames, the deadly shouts of people, and the sight of the swaying knife, now gathering a thick coat of blood. I fell to my knees, as the vision ended. It took my breath away, but i wanted to keep going. I entered the asylum. I remembered a story my mom told me of a twelve year old boy who was diagnosed with schizophrenia apparently was also a pyromaniac. He would set small fires in his…

I continue on the Briones to Diablo Trail and soon intersect with the Indian Creek Trail. As I near the junction, an owl hoots in the distance. The sound is coming from the oak woodland below, along Indian Creek, the namesake for the trail. I descend the trail in the twilight and head into the embrace of the woods. The owl continues its haunting call as I wander further down the trail. I stop and listen, and soon enough, I spot a dark silhouette on a branch not far away. I watch for a while, taking in the mystery and magic of the moment as the dark begins to close in. Soon it will be too dark to see in this sheltered area of the…

Echolocation was first discovered back in 1938. Donald Griffin was the first person to discover echolocation after performing experiments on different bats. Over time with several different experiments that were conducted, it was obvious that bats used echoes to “see” where they were going. By using the these echoes, they were able to find their prey, and fly through the night sky without running into objects.…

Walking through the abandoned high school hallways was even scarier at night, especially with the news that had gone all around about two teens who were found dead in our school parking lot three weeks ago. To this day the killer is still on the run, nowhere to be found. Quickly I head towards my car and at the same time feel a cold shiver go up my spine, I try to ignore it. I realize itś a Friday the day when most teens head out to the cabin hidden deep within the woods to have some fun. My friend Grace and brother Caleb were going so why shouldn’t I ? Heading towards the cabin I keep remembering about that tingly sensation on my back giving me the chills it felt as if a spider had crawled all over me. “ No , just ignore it” I kept telling myself over and over. When I returned to my five senses I realized I had already passed the cabin, quickly I made a U-turn and coincidentally the car behind me did too. It didn't bother me much until after having driven for 10 minutes the same car was trailing me! I realized the driver was following…
