Schools should limit online speech because it could endanger people’s lives, be disruptive to education, and display offensive information. “The First Amendment to the Constitution says,””Congress shall make no law...abridging [limiting] the freedom of speech...”” (Online Speech Mini-Q 179). Freedom of speech has limits; examples are clear and present danger, fighting words, obscenity, conflict with other important interest, and the time, place, and manner which are not protected by the First Amendment. In 1925, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment applied to multiple levels of government, which included public schools. In 1969, the Supreme Court ruled that free speech rights don’t end at school grounds, and in 2007 the Supreme Court allowed the school to punish students for speech outside of the school campus. Therefore, schools should be allowed to limit online speech in order to protect students from physical and mental harassment as well as distractions.…

“What has clearly emerged in the literature among school aged youth is that the impact of cyberbullying on the victim, the bully, and the bystander is associated with poorer academic performance, lack of confidence, low self-esteem, higher incidences of depression, loneliness, emotional distress, and alienation” (Crisholm). This means that the effect of cyberbullying on the victim, the bully and the people who are watching has been affected with their academic standings and they have a lot of things going through their lives. They probably have their personal problems and which resulted to no self-confidence, their self-esteem is low, and leads to loneliness and…

As researchers are saying bullying in schools is becoming more common, and nothing is really being done about it. In the article Bullying In Schools author Ron Banks states some statistics, “approximately 15 percent of students are bullied regularly or are initiators of bullying”. When students are being bullied they never really tell anybody about it because they don’t want to be known as a “tattle tale”, and get bullied more. Most of bullying comes from children who are living in a home with physical punishment, so they learn to be aggressive and mean. “60 percent of those characterized as bullies in grades 6-9 had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24.”# The main reason why kids become bullies is so they get a reaction,…

Traditional bullying is easier to notice and is what comes to mind when thinking about bullying. Cyber bullying occurs electronically and involves negative remarks over text or messaging systems, rumors over the Internet, spreading embarrassing pictures, and any other form of humiliation or threat targeted to a child by another child (Arnold & Rockinson- Szapkiw, 2012; Kowaski & Limber, 2007; Slonje & Smith, 2008). Cyber bullying tends to be less overt as it is usually done privately through social media or some digital device. Similarly, indirect bullying is also less obvious because it’s rather discreet and includes spreading rumors behind ones back, withholding friendship, lying, and making someone feel guilty (Arnold & Rockinson- Szapkiw, 2012). All these different kinds of bullying behavior make it difficult to define bullying behavior and prevent it. Even so, it is important to bring awareness to schools and researchers about the issue of bullying so that proper procedures can be investigated on how to best prevent school-…

I feel that limiting online speech that happens outside of school is an unnecessary punishment that school districts are forcing upon students. Looking at the survey of British school teachers it is said that 84.9% reported not being cyberbullied. The survey also tells if it affected the person and 38.6% of people had no effect. With this type of major percentage it is showing that cyberbullying is not a widespread problem schools are making out to be. I feel that over exaggerating cyberbullying will cause over exaggerating solutions.…

Cyber bullying has bad and serious effects on both the bully and the bullied. The first and worst consequence of cyber bullying is the fatal outcome of such instances. The failure by children to report to adults and the relevant authority figure has led to many children committing suicide due to the depression, which results from cyber bullying. Reports in the USA today, show that at least three children of between 12-13 years of age committed suicide because of cyber bullying (LLC, 2010).…
