Mingi Movie Analysis

This heartwarming and extraordinary documentary infiltrates the lives of the Kara people in one of the oldest tribes in Ethiopia. The tribe seems to be preserved in terms of the way things are ran, a person must confine in the elders of the tribe first before doing anything. The youth of the tribe adopted some of the western culture as far as clothing and the education that is taught. When diving deep into the culture, the film uncovers one of the tribes biggest secrets known as ‘mingi’. Mingi is a curse that effects the youth of the tribe and it comes about in three ways. There are three types of Mingi which are: Girl Mingi, Teeth Mingi, and Women Mingi. Girl Mingi is when a girl conceives out of wedlock. Teeth Mingi is when a baby who is two get its teeth on the top before the bottom and Women Mingi is when a child is born without the elders blessings. The Mingi children
If John Rowe would have decided to use a narrator, the film would have had a dull effect on the audience. The Kara people expressed how scared they were of mingi and some were even scared to talk about it. One women in the film expressed how mad she was when she found out that her daughter was carrying a mingi baby and another women in the film said that she killed over 12 mingi babies and had no remorse. If the director would have used a narrator, the audience would have thought that the Kara people were evil because of what they were doing to mingi children. He allowed the Kara people to talk for themselves and explain why they did just things. Mingi practices was all they knew because it had been done for generations. Allowing the Kara people to talk allowed the audience to fully understand why they did what they did and the pain that many dealt with through the years of
