Military Recruit Selection
Only 1% of Americans have served or are serving in the armed forces of the US. After the end of the draft, the military switched to an all-volunteer force; but how does the military recruit today’s personnel?
This analysis will hopefully provide a thorough, thoughtful, and objective analysis of the process and methods used for selection and performance assessments in the USN. Additionally, strengths and areas that may need improvement will be analyzed and recommendations provided.
Employee selection and assessment are important responsibilities for all managers. It aids an organization select and promote the right people. This process begins with the method the USN employs to select people.

However, do those methods help the organization ensure that the best people are employed and/or promoted? In my opinion, the analysis of these methods leads me to deem that the USN has a robust system for selecting the people it employs. They follow a process that includes interviews, tests, and evaluations to employ and promote personnel for the job. The only issue that I perceive concerning promotion is the usage of internal personnel in selection boards every year. These boards are manned with senior management from the organization which enhances the probability that they are evaluating a friend or co-worker. Additionally, the board is not permanently staffed by the same individuals which might cause a learning …show more content…
It maintains the highest standards and treats all personnel fairly ensuring they meet the organization’s objectives (Human Resource Management, 2009).
Identify and Analyze Performance Appraisal Program The USN has a performance evaluation system that is utilized to evaluate personnel from the day they go to training to their last day of employment. In this section, I will identify and analyze the performance evaluation system and provide a clear and concise understanding of what it entails. Additionally, I will provide a breakdown of the form that is employed to evaluate performance, as well as who conducts these evaluations. Finally, I will provide the best practices followed, as well as strengths and limitations of this program.
Formal or Informal
The performance evaluation system is a formal program that is managed by the CNP. As such, these evaluations are the basis for promotion of personnel, as well as ensuring that manning levels meet the organization's objectives. As a result, every member of the organization will be evaluated and receive a report which will be signed by the employee, the evaluator, and the senior manager in charge.
