Military Draft Pros And Cons
To begin with, it is necessary to define what is a military draft. A military draft is known as a system which individuals who are 18 through 25 years of age are required to join and serve in the Army if they prove to be suitable after an appropriate assessment. Then after proper training, are sent to war or assigned to duties within the Army. Lately, a military draft reinstatement is gaining more attention since the military has a serious problem with recruitment and retaining, however some Americans argue that a military draft directly involves a set of particular disadvantages. Although the military draft no longer exists there are several advantages to mandatory enlistment in the military. One of the most distinct advantages of a military draft is that it guarantees the safety of our country due to a higher rate of involvement of service men and women who will protect and ensure combat readiness for a country in case if its national security is under the risk ("List Of 12 Key Pros And Cons Of Military Draft"). Specifically, those individuals of eighteen years and above will learn to be respectful of authority, improve their abilities in leadership, and have enhanced self-discipline. These traits will be equally useful even after the military service and during their lives ("List Of 12 Key Pros And Cons Of Military Draft"). In this case, discipline and responsibility for them will take on new significance. Young people will become not only responsible for their country, but the world as well. Additionally, serving in the military can subsequently reduce the rate of unemployment.     Young men fight and die for their country in every single war, and Vietnam was no different. However, U.S. forces during the Vietnam War, on average, were the youngest in American history. In previous wars many men in their twenties were drafted for military service, and men of that age and older would often volunteer. During the Vietnam War most of the volunteers and draftees were teenagers; the average age was nineteen. In World War II, the average American soldier was twenty-six years old. At the age of eighteen young men could join or be drafted into the army. At seventeen, with the consent of a guardian, boys could enlist in the Marine Corps. At the beginning of the war, hundreds of seventeen year old marines served in Vietnam. However, in November 1965, the Pentagon ordered that all American troops must be eighteen before being deployed in the war zone. The soldiers sent off to Vietnam can be divided into three categories: one-third draftees, one-third draft-motivated volunteers, and one-third true volunteers. As the war continued, the number of volunteers steadily declined. Almost half of the army troops were draftees, and in the combat units the portion was commonly as high as two-thirds; late in the war it was even higher. These were the majority of the people dying in the war, from 1966 to 1969, the percentage of draftees who died in the war doubled from 21 to 40. Those who could avoid the draft legally through deferments were the upper class, while those in the middle and lower class who didn’t want to fight in the war had to figure out ways to avoid the draft. Because the draft threatened middle and lower class males between the ages of 18 to 35, they united together through protests to oppose the draft by burning draft cards.…

    I do not agree with the reinstitution of a military draft. In 1973 the military draft was lifted in the United States and with good reason. The United States should not rely on a draft to fill military vacancies but rely on recruitment.     There is a buzz around talking about mandatory military service, and I agree with it. There should be a mandatory draft for all young men and women from the ages of 18 to 21. The United States has gone through so many changes in just a short time; WWII was only 65 years ago, a long with the Korean War only 50 plus years ago and now we get to deal with the attack of 9/11.
