Midterm exam prep sheet, History 406W. 2-11, Spring 2013

The exam is scheduled for Wednesday, 6 March, 9:10-10:00 in Horton 210. You need bring only pens or pencils; we will supply the paper. Essay (50 points): You will be assigned one of these three questions. It should take about 25 minutes of your time to answer it, and your answer should have a clear argument that addresses the question and evidence drawn from the reading and lectures. Keep in mind that you may need to bring in information from the entire period of 1865 to 1933
1) It is 1933, and you were born in 1865. Choose to be either a black woman in Mississippi
I was born in Mississippi in 1865 when the civil war began, a male Polish immigrant and laborer in Chicago, a wealthy industrialist in New York, or a middle class white woman in Denver. Based on your choice, what are the three most significant national events, trends, or beliefs in your life time? Explain why.
2) What was Frederick Jackson Turner’s frontier thesis? Why did his ideas affect Americans so much, and how did they influence American culture and policy? In formulating your response, be sure to include at least three of the following topics: democracy, race, immigration, industrialization, and imperialism.
3) Consider industrialization in the United States from 1865 to 1933. On balance, was it a positive or negative for the nation? Be sure to address at least two good things and two bad things about industrialization.
The other 50 points will be drawn from the ID list below, as well as the opening and closing dates of the Spanish-American War and U.S. participation in the First World War, and the outcomes of the Presidential elections that we have discussed (1876, 1896, 1912, 1920, 1932). You will have to write 4 identifications from a list of 8 that I provide from the list below. Each ID should be about 60-70 words long and include date or date range, definition, and
