Middle School Recess

Do you think that middle schoolers should have time for recess? I don’t think that middle schools should have a set time for recess. Recess is for little kids not almost adults.

Don’t have recess for middle school students because they need to worry about their school work. If you let them have recess that is what they will be waiting for just like how we wait for the end of the day so that we could go home or when we wait for lunch. Yes it is good exercise but students need to stay focused on their work.

“About 40% of public schools have already cut, or plan on cutting recess from their school day” (Education Reporter, 1). Along with that more and more schools are now taking away physical education classes to make more time for math, reading, and writing. The main concern with taking these out of schools is that it will contribute to the rising issue of childhood obesity. Also, children benefit from short recess breaks throughout the day in many different ways. The last reason recess and P.E. should be required is that physical activity is a very important part of the development of a young child. Academics and test scores are important; however educators must look out for the health and well-being of every child. I believe that recess and physical education class should not be taken out of schools; they should be required as part of every day curriculum.…

Recess is a playground for debate amongst educational researchers and philosophers. In primary schools, twenty five percent of injuries will take place on the playground (Hill). Bullying and unhealthy competition are areas of recess concern and thus recess is considered a waste of academic time. Is this a valid reason to completely eliminate recess in elementary schools? Forty percent of the nation’s 16,000 schools have either already modified, replaced, or consider eliminating recess (LaHoud).…

Recess gives children the opportunity to learn social skills that are not able to learn in the classroom. Through play, they improve their communication skills, they practice negotiation and cooperation, and they learn how to be part of a team (Murray, & Ramstetter, 2013). For instance, when children invent games to play at recess, they practice listening and communicating as the rules are negotiated and compromised. They ask questions to get clarification about how to play. Once the rules are set, they practice following them. They learn that they have to take turns and work as a team to accomplish their goals. If a conflict arises, they work on resolution skills in order that the game can continue. Many of the social skills that are needed throughout life are practiced out on the playground at recess. As important as all of those skills are, the benefits of recess extend into children’s physical well-being as…

It is a chronic condition with severe negative consequences to the developing teenage body and its effects may be even more dire when combined with the stress of heavy schoolwork along with extracurricular activities. Professional doctors advise and recommend growing teenagers to sleep eight hours or more, however this proves to be rather very difficult with the interference of the standard school schedule starting early in the morning. Starting school at a later time may highly reduce the negative effects of sleep deprivation and possibly improve the conditions of students.…

Did you know that recess helps students in school? Well, it's true! Although some parents think that recess just makes kids misbehave and fool around which is possible, most of the time recess has a very positive impact on students. Banning recess in elementary schools has been an important topic of debate for most school districts around the country. As stated by the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines recess as ‘regularly scheduled periods within the elementary school day for unstructured physical activity and play’” (Murray and Ramstetter 183).
