Dr Ellena,

I have been informed that Tomahawk Creek Middle School is considering a year-round schedule. I understand that this means that there will be three-week breaks after each nine weeks, instead of one long summer break. I respect the school board’s decision, but I believe that this may be a colossal failure. Please consider these points that may have been overlooked. First of all, this means we will be in school during August. We will not have that long for maintenance or repairs to happen. Also, a new dress code would have to be created for the summer. Our school breaks will not be aligned with other schools, throwing off entertainment businesses. And on beautiful days, we will be in our school classes. Something else to consider,

    Have you ever considered switching to year round schooling? Here are some reasons not to switch, the summer time is packed and expensive, it’s harder for students and teachers, and finally there is a greater possibility for brain drain. In the article “Top 10 Reasons Why Year Round School is a Good Idea,” it states that by having one big vacation block, travel is more expensive. No matter the amount of time you get for summer you will still wind up spending more because both of the summer breaks, for year round and regular schooling, are during the summer months which are when airlines raise their prices.
