Mickey Vs. Lyons
The first thing I did with my group was to create freeze frames, showing a clear contradiction between the lives of Edward and Mrs Lyons, and Mickey and Ms Johnstone. We performed the scene in which Edward and Mickey asked their mothers, whether or not they could go to the cinema. To show the clear contrast, we showed Mrs Lyons to be quite an overly protective mother, who wanted to know: the movie, the age restriction, the venue and many other pieces of information; however, Ms Johnstone was portrayed as quite an immature and careless mother, who laughed at Mickey when she knew what movie Mickey was going to watch. The laughing from Ms Johnstone is evidence of how she enjoys a bit of a joke, unlike her counterpart: Mrs Lyons. To show two events happening at the same time, but at a different place, we used split-staging. As we finished a scene we froze and the other side started. This was largely the fault of the whole group as we didn’t focus on audience awareness and just focused on the content of the play. The other fatal error that we made was that we didn’t use the script enough so the dialogue was our interpretation of the characters, which was conflicting with other people’s views of the script. This meant that we demonstrated our view that wasn’t understood by the audience and this caused a lot of confusion for the audience and caused some disengagement. If my group and I were to perform this same task we would direct ourselves more to help with our positioning. To do this we will make sure we rehearse facing the way our audience would be sitting and will get one of our group members to stand outside of the performance and make sure everything is alright before they join the performance

To enhance conflict I decided to place Ruby and Ray upstage so that they have a closer proximity with the audience. I decided to create many pauses between Sylvie and Ray’s dialogue to redefine the conflict. For example when Sylvie says, ‘Ray…? Where’s Ruby?’ and Ray responds with, ‘I don’t know, Sylvie! I decided for Sylvie to imagine the mannequin of Ruby is outside the front under the street lamp so she is looking out into the audience enhancing the conflict revolving around the missing mannequin which she says. ‘The mannequin! She’s not under the street lamp. Somebody’s taken her. Who could be that cruel?’ Sylvie is looking out frantically into the audience making the audience feel uncomfortable and uneasy enhancing the conflict of this missing mannequin. One last way in which conflict is shown is through the body part of Ruby being sent in a parcel and how they don’t know the answers to who sent it and why and how it event got there reinforcing the invasion of a safe neighbourhood.     In my opinion, the most successful aspect in this play was the actresses, not just because they were good, but rather because they were incredibly believable. I did not feel that I was watching actors on the stage, rather that I was watching the lives of the six individuals unfold. They became their characters. A perfect example of this can be seen when Sabrina Hyman, who was playing the part of Truvy, was decorating the salon for Christmas and had to improv. While placing tinsel on the couch she was unable to keep it on the desired spot, because it kept falling off of the arm. Initially when she realized that the tinsel was not staying in its place she did not panic, as one would have thought. Instead she simply tried again, and then even a third time without showing any signs of a problem, she had to finally walk away without properly placing the tinsel where it should have been. This quick change in events did not throw her off in the least; she played it off like nothing was wrong. She played it off, as Truvy Jones would have in real life.     This change was made because the full-length performance was too long to memorize and we started making mistakes and forgetting whole segments past the halfway point, and because the portion that we ultimately performed contained many of the funniest moments in the show. Secondly, our final performance was performed on a built set in the drama room rather than in the library because the library was too large and was capturing our energy. Thirdly, our final performance had a much higher level of energy than our dress rehearsal.     Through December 5th through the 7th, I performed in Thornton Wilder's play of Our Town. The only sets or props that the actors or actresses used where folding chairs for us to sit in, umbrellas to hide Emily (Julie Dumbler), and flats on both sides of the stage to hide the people behind them. The reason for the lack of set is so the audience can use there imagination of what the town of Grover's Corner, New Hampshire looks like. All the rest of the props that the actors had to use were pan mimed and acted out to the fullest to make it look real. The only other experience with no set was with Miss Henery in Neodesha and it was a disaster so I didn't know how well this was going to work out. But with the help of our director Peter Ellenstein and the rest of the cast, the pan miming was very successful. Our performance space was a modified thrust stage. The shape of the stage served us well for this play, but the back stage was horrible. All of the chairs that we had to use were folding chairs that made a lot of noise even if you hardly touched one. One neat thing about the play is that all of the sound affects were made by our backstage manager (Lisa Mitchell) or other members of the cast. In exception for the clock chiming at the end of the play. People who have seen the play tell me that it is a very heart moving play. I did not get that feeling because I was always backstage or onstage. Ether way I didn't get to watch the play so I couldn't see what was so moving about it. The only humor I got was from lines and the funniest person I heard was Professor Willard (Gary Mitchell). The audience is led through the entire play by the Stage Manager (Cory Venable). He literally talks to the audience between every scene explaining what is going on in the story. I thought Mr. Wilder did a good job in having a Stage Manager do this. The Stage Manager tells and shows us a story a young girl growing up and facing death, even after death. He show us how Emily…

    My group chose to perform seven scenes from the play. The beginning scene for our piece is looking at how the lack of money affected the children at that time, with children that were complaining they were hungry and that they didn’t have all they wanted and showing that the mother couldn’t do anything about it. We chose this scene to start our piece as it shows the audience straight away the time and place the whole play is set in. Mrs Johnston then does a small monologue about how she is coping and how difficult life would be with two more children on the way. I feel this scene allows me to demonstrate my acting ability as it is a monologue and I have to show a lot of emotion when performing it. The fourth scene shows how superstitious Mrs Lyons is and introduces the theme of superstition, which plays a major part throughout the original play. The ‘Our Sammy’ speech was included in our piece as it is a key moment within the text. The final scenes show Mickey and Eddie meeting and how Mrs Johnston reacts when she realises they are friends. We felt that these scenes would be suitable for our piece as the meeting of the two boys is very important to the play and the final scene, again, incorporates the theme of superstition.…

    An element of the craft of acting that is an important aspect when performing is voice. Voice can set the mood and tone of for an actor through dialogue and can enhance their overall performance. This was evident in Travis Hennessy’s (Alain) performance. He had a controlled and a well-established vocal control, especially in the area of projection. Projection is vital to ensuring that a play is heard and understood, without projection a play becomes arduous to hear and the audience become disgruntled. Regardless of whether he was engaged in a quiet phone conversation or yelling at other characters with vexation, Hennessy spoke with clarity and consistently projected his voice to the back row of the audience.
