Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine is a deceiving, manipulative, over exaggerated film. Even though it fits the definition of a documentary by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it doesn’t deserve an Oscar Award for stretching out the truth so far. Michael Moore shows his trustworthiness through his films with the way he dresses like the everyday American. His baseball cap, casual t-shirt and jeans make us believe he’s just like us. In his film, he does go out to Buell Elementary in Michigan to speak with the principal of the school where a 6 year old, Dedrick Owens, shot one of his classmates, Kayla Rolland. She gets a bit emotional and teary-eyed. We see that Moore’s first instinct is to tell her, “It’s okay... It’s okay...
He tries to make us have an emotional impact because of the place where Dedrick was raised. But he doesn’t mention how welfare reliance significantly went down and the poverty rate went down as well. In the movie, he gets together with 2 survivors from the Columbine shooting and goes to K-Mart to talk to the administration. He mentioned that the boys that shot up Columbine High School, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, bought their ammunition from a local K-Mart. Its information is not a reliable resource that people can show to inform others. In one scene of the film, there is a part where Moore interviews Charlton Heston and makes him seem like an inconsiderate person after he asks him why he spoke at a NRA convention after the shooting of a little girl. That actually didn’t occur. That specific part of the film was staged and completely false. He “shows” Heston the picture of the little girl that died in Michigan. “Ah Mr. Heston, just one more thing... this is who she is. Or was... This is her. Mr. he, please don’t leave. Mr. Heston please. Take a look at her. This is the girl..... Hm...” It leaves us feeling stunned of the response Heston gave us and it’s all fabricated. There is the part where Michael Moore goes to North Country Bank in Michigan to get a free gun. He opens up a 20-year CD account. “When you see me going in to the bank and walking out with my new gun in Bowling for Columbine, that is exactly as it happened. Nothing was done out of the ordinary other than to phone ahead and ask permission to let me bring a camera in to film me opening up my account” (Moore 3). We all know that is entirely false.
