Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brooklyn New York on February 17th 1963 (Michael Jordan Bio). Michael is the fourth of five children born from James and Deloris Jordan, James a mechanic and Deloris a bank teller (Morissley 1). Soon after Michael was born Deloris realized that the streets of Brooklyn was not the safest place to raise five children. So the Jordans moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where Michael would play his high school basketball career (Morissley 1). Little do many people know is that Michael Jordans first love was baseball a sport which Michael took up in his early years in Wilmington while still in elementary school, not basketball (Morissley 2). However Michael was truly a gifted natural born basketball player according to his father James, “one day, god was sitting around and decided to make the perfect basketball player. He gave him a little hardship early to make him appreciate what he would earn in the end and called him Michael Jordan” (Morissley 1) There were times when Michael had to face adversity. As a young child Michael Jordan moved to North Carolina, where they lived out in the country, almost completely isolated from the rest of the world. This is why Jordan’s dad put up two basketball hoops in the back yard and this is where Michael could always be found. After high school, Michael played 3 years on scholarship at University of Carolina. In 1984, Jordan was the 3rd pick of the NBA draft. Jordan played 8 seasons with the Chicago Bulls, earning “Rookie of the Year” award, 6 consecutive national championships, 3 NBA MVP’s, and 2 olympic gold medals. After 8 seasons, Jordan retired to play professional baseball. 2 years later, Jordan quit baseball and came back to the NBA and played 6 seasons as the star of the Washington Wizards, before he retired for a second and final time. Lebron James was born December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio. He was a natural athlete and played football and basketball. He attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He was a starter his freshman year for Fightin’ Irish. He was named Ohio’s “Mr. Basketball” his sophomore year and the first one as well. He also became the first sophomore ever selected to the USA Today All-USA First Team. In his junior year, his stats improved. He averaged 29.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.3. steals. and was named Mr. Basketball of Ohio again. He earned a spot on the All-USA First Team and was named the 2001-2002 boys’ basketball Gatorade National Player of the Year. This is where he got his nickname King James. He appeared in SLAM Magazine which began his nationwide exposure. However, this caused the team to be forced to move up to a higher division, Division II and lost its state title to Roger Bacon High School. He attempted to declare for the NBA draft after the season ended, petitioning for an adjustment to the NBA’s draft eligibility rules, which at the time required prospective players to have at least completed high school.
