Leadership can be defined as encouraging other people to succeed, and also to leave a strong influence on them when everything is said and done. There have been many leaders in history whether in sports or in world history. One person who was an excellent leader is Michael Jordan. Jordan is a professional basketball player who played for the Chicago Bulls during the 80’s and 90’s and is referred to as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Michael Jordan’s competitive nature and strong leadership qualities like courage and loyalty enabled him to make everyone on the court a better player and a better person, and also helped him win 6 NBA championships. Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brooklyn New York on February 17th 1963 (Michael Jordan Bio). Michael is the fourth of five children born from James and Deloris Jordan, James a mechanic and Deloris a bank teller (Morissley 1). Soon after Michael was born Deloris realized that the streets of Brooklyn was not the safest place to raise five children. So the Jordans moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where Michael would play his high school basketball career (Morissley 1). Little do many people know is that Michael Jordans first love was baseball a sport which Michael took up in his early years in Wilmington while still in elementary school, not basketball (Morissley 2). However Michael was truly a gifted natural born basketball player according to his father James, “one day, god was sitting around and decided to make the perfect basketball player. He gave him a little hardship early to make him appreciate what he would earn in the end and called him Michael Jordan” (Morissley 1) There were times when Michael had to face adversity. As a sophomore in high school, Jordan got cut from his varsity basketball team (Jordan and Veraducci 58). As soon as Jordan was born, his parents decided to move to Wilmington, North Carolina to avoid the exposure of drugs and violence to their four children.
