Michael Jerome Oher Jr: The American Dream Of American Football
The American dream

I’ve chosen to write about the offensive tackler Michael Jerome Oher jr. He’s an American football player, and he plays for the Baltimore Ravens. I also chose to write about him, because I wanted to write about a professional sportsman.

Michael Oher comes from a poor family like many others who lived out the American dream. Michael Oher did the incredible, and won the battle against poverty. When Michael Oher was a child, he didn’t have any ‘’real’’ parents. His mother, Denise Oher was addicted to crack cocaine and was being an alcoholic at the same time. His father, Michael Jerome Williams was in prison from a time to another, and was murdered later in prison. At that time, Michael Oher was a senior in high school.
Michael Oher was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in May 28th, 1986. He has twelve brothers and sisters. When he was seven years, he got placed in foster care, because his parents weren’t able to take care of him.

Michael wasn’t very good in school, and that gave him problems later on. Michael started to play American football in his freshman years, at the Briarcrest Christian School. After the 2003 football season at Briarcrest, he was named Division II, Lineman of the Year in 2003, and first team Tennessee All-State. Oher was scouted by the website Scout.com and they rated him 5/5 stars. Scout.com also rated him as the no. 5 offensive lineman in the country, of all the young football players in his position. So Oher was considered as a big talent on his

Boobie Miles and his Uncle L.V. had dreams of Boobie turning professional and being a highly paid running back in the NFL. Marcus Dupree had similar goals and dreams as the media, during his college career, was making him out to be the best to ever play the game. In his high school days Boobie suffered a sickening blow to his knee that set back his dreams of playing in the pros. Dupree signed his letter of intent to join the Oklahoma Sooners after a brilliant high school career that included 87 touchdowns and 7,355 yards; he was simply the best running back to come out of high school ever (Bissinger 1). However, things changed quickly during his sophomore year at Oklahoma. Dupree told his Coach Barry Switzer that he had a dream he would tear up his knee in that day’s game but Barry didn’t care; he played. He ended up tearing every ligament in his knee that day, season over, career in jeopardy.…

It began with the curiosity of a young African American male, name Wes Moore. Whose name appeared in the Baltimore sun in December of 2000. An article was written announcing that he, a young “fatherless” son of yet another single mother, was receiving a Rhodes scholarship. Little, did he know that, not far from his “memorable” write up in the Baltimore Sun, would be a series of article that would change his life even more than his scholarship that he had earned. What was written, were articles, about another “fatherless” son of the city. A young man, who accompanied three others, in a botched jewelry robbery, that ended with a Police officer being shot and killed.…

Growing up in broken homes in a crime-ridden area of Newark, N.J., these three authors could easily have followed their childhood friends into lives of drug-dealing, gangs and prison. They tell harrowing stories of being arrested for assault and mugging drug dealers, and of the lack of options they saw as black teenagers. But when their high school was visited by a recruiter from a college aimed at preparing minority students for medical school, the three friends decided to make something of their lives. Through the rigors of medical and dental school, and a brief detour into performing rap music at local clubs, they supported each other. Today, Davis and Hunt are doctors, and Jenkins is a dentist; the men's Three Doctors Foundation funds scholarships to give other poor black kids the same opportunities. The authors aren't professional readers, and it shows. They're clearly reading aloud, not speaking spontaneously. But the authenticity of their urban accents and the earnestness and sincerity in their voices give their inspiring tale an immediacy that would be lost with a professional narrator. . This book shows the power of friendship and how valuable it is to keep a promise.…

Things we have always had in our lives sometimes are taken for granted. A house, enough food, money for life’s necessities, and sometimes, worst of all, our families. When we have all these things given to us starting from the day we are born, we don’t give very much thought to it. For those without these things, life can be very different. American youth born in areas in which all of these aren’t relatively common are influenced to live very different lives. In The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, both boys named Wes Moore without fathers living in their immensely poor neighborhood display the effects of living in a destitute area without a proper male mentor.…

Michael Oher can be seen as an unsung hero in many people’s eyes. As a young boy, Michael is a homeless boy with no parents in his life. He is the type of kid that gets by with giving the least amount of effort into life. Yet, Michael is given the opportunity to change his life around. Michael is put into an all white Wingate Christian School where he feels out of place and can barely survive. Critics take this move in Michael’s life as a disgrace to the African-American community. The movie actually does address that factor in strong manner. Some critics believe yet it’s truly inspiring, but putting a young black male in a white Christian family and private school is not the place for the African-American race. Even yet, Michael is taken in by a southern white Tennessee family known as the Tuohy’s. As it starts out as a gesture of kindness for Michael, it soon turns into something more like a dream. He becomes part of the Tuohy family despite the differences in their backgrounds. A.V. Club writer Scott Tabias relates The Blind Side to “poor black athletes finding success through white charity.” Regardless of the…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

Ever since Michael was a little kid, he had to learn how to fend for himself. He grew up with seven siblings and a mother who was constantly drunk; so he matured at a very young age in order to survive. “It was just that sometimes she seemed to forget that she had children and that we needed her care, so she’d go off for a while and we kids would be left to take care of ourselves and one another” (Oher 20). In this quote, Michael’s mother would occasionally forget to care for her children every time she was drunk and this led to her children fending for themselves and learning how to survive independently. There were many people in his neighbourhood that ended up in gangs because they didn’t have the money or education to find real jobs. Therefore, Michael was determined that he did not want to end up on the streets, and so this was the start of the obstacles Michael had to face in order to succeed in life. However, due to the lack of child care received from his mother, child services had to separate his family and Michael was left living with many different foster families throughout his life.…

Football has some definite origins linked to Rugby football that was played during the 18th century in England. Football has a cousin in the name of soccer which also draws its origins from the game of rugby. However, soccer is the more stringent form of game, not allowing carrying of ball using hands and some other rules allowed in football like forward pass. Football is different in so much so that it retains the originality of rugby game and is the more sophisticated version of rugby football. Interestingly, the game of football is referred in Japan as "Amefuto".…
